Cortland Dominates Wells, 79-29, Behind Balanced Scoring Attack

CORTLAND, N.Y. – Eleven Cortland players reached the scoring column, including seven who tallied between seven and 12 points, as the Red Dragons cruised past visiting Wells, 79-29, to close out their regular-season non-league schedule. Cortland improved to 8-1 with its sixth straight victory.
 
Shannon McGuire (West Babylon) led the hosts with 12 points. She made 3-of-5 shots from the 3-point arc. Flo Hunte (Elmont/Sewanhaka) finished with 10 points, four rebounds and three steals, Casey Travers (Manorville/Eastport-South Manor) notched nine points, seven rebounds and three steals, and Jess Womble (Wheatley Heights/Half Hollow Hills East), in her first start of the season, recorded nine points, four assists and two steals.
 
Olivia Langdon (Little Falls) contributed eight points and a game-high nine rebounds and Maggie Malone (Cornwall) scored eight points. Julia Siler (Seaford) finished with seven points, four rebounds and three steals and shared the team lead with Womble with four assists.
 
Hunte, Womble, Langdon, Malone and Siler all finished with career-high point totals, with Womble matching her career best from earlier this season at Brockport.
 
Wells (0-10) was led by Jordan Jacobs with nine points, three assists and three steals. Martiza Scharoun, Lorissa Parks and Sonia Rivera each scored six points and Maeghan Westmiller recorded three steals.
 
Cortland led 21-5 after the first quarter and extended its advantage to 37-12 at halftime. Cortland finished the game shooting 41 percent from the floor overall and 32 percent (9-of-28) from 3-point range. Wells was held to 19 percent shooting in the first half and ended the game at 25 percent.
 
The 29 points are the fewest allowed by the Red Dragons since a 53-25 win at Buffalo State in February of 2009.
 
Cortland resumes SUNYAC play this weekend as the Red Dragons host Buffalo State Friday at 5:30 p.m. and Fredonia Saturday at 2 p.m.
