No. 13 Women's Basketball Too Much For PLU

double double 14 points and 11 rebounds and the No. 13 Whitman College women's basketball team completed a perfect Northwest Conference opening weekend with a 69-56 win over Pacific Lutheran on Saturday night.

The Blues (9-1, 2-0 NWC) led from start to finish with major minutes given to their bench. Mady Burdett added 14 points of her own and handed out a game-high seven assists. Kaylie McCracken added eight points and six rebounds off the bench.

Madison Salisbury led all scorers with 16 points (8-11) for the Lutes (5-6, 1-1 NWC) while corralling a team-best eight rebounds. Emma Janousek added 10 points.

Whitman dominated right out of the gates. The Blues scored the game's first 13 points which included six from Stone and capped by a Burdett three pointer. PLU finally got on the board at the 5:02 mark but the momentum stayed with the Blues. Salisbury's layup was the Lutes only basket of the quarter which ended with the Blues up 17-3.

The Lutes got their offense going in the second quarter but that didn't stop the Blues from expanding their lead heading into halftime. PLU connected on three of its first four shots to make it a 23-9 game with 7:16 to play. Whitman's bench had shouldered the load for the first three minutes of the quarter, but Coach Ferenz re-inserted her starters and the lead swelled to 19 points. Burdett's layup inside of a minute to play helped Whitman to a 34-16 halftime lead.

Whitman broke the game open in the third quarter as the lead swelled to over 20 points. Kaelan Shamseldin heated up, nailing back-to-back three pointers to put Whitman up 44-20 with 6:37 to play. The Blues allowed only one PLU basket inside of the final 3:28 as they took a 52-28 lead into what proved to be a fourth quarter formality.

The Blues continue their Northwest Conference homestand next week with games against Lewis & Clark (Jan. 10) and Willamette (Jan. 11).
