Waverly, Iowa, Dec. 30, 2019 – The Washington University in St. Louis women's basketball team could not overcome a slow start in a 72-60 loss to No. 14 Baldwin-Wallace College Monday in the consolation championship of the Wartburg Holiday Tournament in Waverly, Iowa.

Baldwin-Wallace improved to 9-1 with the win, while WashU dropped to 7-4. All four of WashU's losses this season have been to teams ranked in the D3hoops.comTop-25 Poll.

Freshman Rachel Mahler led WashU with a career-high 20 points and eight rebounds. Mahler was 7-of-11 from the field, and also hit 4-of-6 from three-point range. Freshman Sammi Matoush added 10 points on 6-of-6 free-throw shooting.

WashU shot a season-low 31.6 percent (18-57) from the field, and hit just 8-of-26 from three-point range. The Bears connected on 16-of-20 from the free-throw line.

WashU missed its first six shots from the field and trailed 9-0 to start the contest. Freshman Naomi Jackson canned a three with 4:17 to play in the first for the Bears' first bucket of the game. WashU trailed 23-8 after one quarter, hitting just 2-of-15 shots from the field.

Mahler's three with 8:01 to play before half cut the lead down to 10 (23-13), and then a three at the buzzer by freshman Molly Gannon trimmed the lead to 32-25. Gannon led WashU with eight points on a pair of three-pointers as the Bears shot just 27.6 percent (8-29).

Jackson canned a three to highlight a 9-4 run by WashU as the Bears tied the contest at 38-38 with 4:08 left in the third. WashU would get the lead down to just two (44-42) with 9:17 to lay, but a 9-0 run by BW put the game out of reach.

Riley Schill led Baldwin-Wallace with 20 points, while Sydney Diedrich (15), Kara Marshall (11) and Hannah Fecht (10) also scored in double figures. WashU limited BW to 35.7 percent (20-56) shooting from the field, but connected on 25-of-29 free-throws.

WashU returns home to plays its third-straight top-20 opponent on Saturday, Jan. 11, against No. 20 University of Chicago. Tip-off is set for 1 p.m.
