Successful Homecoming: Vinson's Fast Start Sparks WPI's California Sweep

Pasadena, CA --- Southern California native Spencer Vinson (Los Angeles, CA) scored the first six points of the game on her way to a career-best equaling 20 points as WPI women's basketball led wire-to-wire in a 60-45 triumph over host Cal Tech on Monday afternoon.

The victory was the Engineers second in as many days during their trip to the Los Angeles area as the Boynton Hillers had bested Occidental on Sunday 80-61.  WPI is now 7-4 on the season while the Beavers dip to 2-9 overall.

Vinson canned all six of her first half shots from the field.  She finished the game shooting 10-of-13 and grabbed a game-high 10 rebound to post her third double-double of the season and seventh in her career.  Rookie center Emily Raynowska (Brentwood, NH) harvested 10 points on her way to her second career-best scoring performance in the last two days.  Alana Keating (Leominster, MA) joined the duo in double figures with 10 points.

Sara Lyons (Pittsford, NY), Maddie Blake (Bedford, NH) and Melanie Presseau (Manchester, MA) contributed seven, six and six rebounds respectively as the Crimson and Gray outrebounded Cal Tech 48-34, outscored the hosts in the paint 36-18 and enjoyed a 13-4 edge in fast break points.  Lyons also chipped in with six points, a career-high four assists and a pair of steals. McKenna Finken (Simsbury, CT) and Presseau both accounted for three steals.

Behind Vinson's eight first quarter points, the visitors shot 46.2% from the floor in the opening 10 minutes, holding the Beavers to a 17.6% shooting clip en route to 14-6 advantage after one period.  WPI duplicated the 14-point showing in the second quarter only to see Cal Tech's Grace Pena (San Ramon, CA) beat the halftime buzzer with a long corner 3-pointer to cut the Engineer advantage to 11 (28-17) at the half.  The hosts got to within seven points at 31-24 in the middle of the third quarter but a 9-2 run over the next four minutes secured the victory for the guests.

Sahana Saikumar (Arcadia, CA) tallied team-highs of 14 points and eight rebounds for Cal Tech while Pena finished with 11 points.  Alexa Lauinger (Ortonville, MI) flirted with a double-double of her own, notching eight points and seven boards.

WPI returns to the east coast to conclude a four-game road trip with a 1pm contest Saturday at Westfield State.  Cal Tech returns to conference play the same day with a 4pm SCIAC matchup at La Verne.
