YellowJackets Take No. 16 Oglethorpe to OT, Fall 89-85

ATLANTA, Ga. -- LeTourneau University's women's basketball team gave the 16th-ranked team in the country a scare before falling 89-85 to host Oglethorpe in overtime at the TownePlace Suites by Marriott Classic Monday night.

LETU (2-4) led by as many as 12 in the first half in a game that featured seven ties and just one lead change. The YellowJackets led by 10 after one quarter and eight at the break. Oglethorpe (9-1) came back in the second half, only to have the Jackets tie the game late, send it to overtime, and then nearly force a second extra period.

The YellowJackets' bench outscored the Stormy Petrels, 35-11. LeTourneau had 21 second chance points to Oglethorpe's 16.

Flora Akingbade had 16 points, 13 rebounds, a block and a steal. It was Akingbade's first double-double, and both her points and rebounds marked career highs for the transfer from Jacksonville College. Bailey Lightfoot scored 18 points, and had four rebounds off the bench. Keauna Whitfield finished with 15 points, six rebounds, four assists and two steals. Vanessa Cruz had 12 points, four assists and two steals. Malacia Guy had 11 points.

The Jackets ran out to a 13-6 lead on a layup by Whitfield. Oglethorpe's Amy Vazquez cut it to 14-12 with 3:45 left in the first period. Scruffy Hopkins buried a three a minute later as LETU pushed its lead out to 10. Akingbade's layup at the 7:35 mark in the second quarter stretched the lead to 12. After Nikki Reed split a pair from the free throw line as the Petrels cut it to nine, Guy canned a triple to make it a 12-point game again with 5:17 to go in the half. Oglethorpe shrank the deficit to six, but Whitfield scored on two straight possessions to keep LeTourneau in front by double digits. Following Cruz's three-ball inside the final minute of the half that gave LETU a 42-32 lead, Savannah Legate sank two free throws to trim the YellowJackets' lead to eight at the intermission.

LeTourneau, which made a season-high 11 three-pointers and held Oglethorpe to two, built the double digit lead throughout most of the first half despite the Stormy Petrels' 53.8 percent field goal shooting in the second quarter.

OU opened the second half with a 12-1 run to take a three-point lead on Reed's triple, but Lightfoot hit a 3 of her own on the next trip down the floor as the YellowJackets tied the game with 7:14 to go in the third period. The Petrels widened their lead to six on two occasions in the quarter before Cruz scored with 19 seconds in the quarter. Akingbade sank two free throws with 7:28 left in regulation to tie the game at 62-62. Oglethorpe pushed its lead back to seven, but Guy hit a triple, and Akingbade sank two free throws with 38 seconds on the clock to knot it at 73-73.

The Petrels scored the first two buckets in overtime before Lightfoot made one of her four threes at the 3:47 mark to pull the Jackets within one. Oglethorpe built the lead back to four on two more occasions before Akingbade scored on an inbounds pass with 30 seconds to play to make it a two-point game. After the Petrels split a pair from the stripe, Whitfield scored to cut it to one. Olivia Herrera sank three free throws to give Oglethorpe a four-point cushion before Lightfoot drilled another three to pull the YellowJackets within one again. After Reed split a pair from the line, the Jackets couldn't get a shot off in the closing seconds, and the Stormy Petrels survived.

LeTourneau went 16 of 24 from the free throw line. Akingbade went a career-best 8-for-10 from the stripe. Oglethorpe was 29 of 43.

Both teams made 29 field goals -- the Jackets on 83 attempts, and the Stormy Petrels on 68 shots. The YellowJackets grabbed 23 offensive rebounds, including five by Akingbade, while the Petrels had 17 boards on the offensive glass. Both teams turned the ball over 18 times.

LeTourneau will play Centre College 1 p.m. Tuesday to conclude the tournament.
