Fourth quarter surge propels Presidents past Capital, 67-60

BEXLEY, Ohio -- The Washington & Jefferson College women's basketball team used an 18-4 run over the final five minutes to register a 67-60 road victory over Capital University Saturday afternoon in non-conference play.    
 
Junior guard Lauren Gilbert (Pittsburgh, Pa./Baldwin) paced the Presidents with a season-best 20 points in a season-high 34 minutes.
 
Junior forward Alie Seto (Allison, Pa./Brownsville) recorded her second double-double of the season with 12 points and 10 rebounds. Hannah Johnston (East Freedom, Pa./Central) chipped in a career-high 15 points, as the junior guard knocked down nine-of-10 free throw attempts.
 
Free throw shooting was a key in the win for the Presidents. W&J posted a stellar performance at the charity stripe, as the Red and Black knocked down 24-of-26 attempts (92.3 percent). The Presidents drained 12-of-14 free throw attempts during the fourth quarter.
 
Facing a 56-49 deficit with five minutes remaining, the Presidents started chipping away at the Crusaders lead. A technical foul on Capital help spark the rally, as the Presidents recorded four points on a single possession.
 
Two successful free throws by Gilbert preceded a made jump shot by sophomore Aleena McDaniel (Morgantown, W.Va./Morgantown) trimmed the deficit to 56-53 with 4:50 to play.
 
The Presidents then took a 57-56 lead with back-to-back layups by Johnston and junior forward Maria Lawhorne (Pittsburgh, Pa./Plum). Capital momentarily regained the lead (58-57) with a pair of free throws with 2:55 to play.
 
W&J answered with seven straight points to build a 64-58 lead over Capital with 34 seconds left. All seven points during the run came at the charity stripe, four from makes by Johnston and three from makes by McDaniel. Capital would use a layup to cut the deficit to four points (64-60) but Johnston would ice the game with three more free throws to close out the win.
 
The Presidents held an early 9-2 lead before the Crusaders recorded the final 10 points for a 12-9 edge after the first quarter. Capital would build a seven-point (24-17) lead in the latter stages of the second quarter before taking a 29-24 advantage into halftime.
 
W&J limited Capital from beyond the three-point line, as the host Crusaders converted just three-of-15 attempts (20 percent) from distance. The Presidents held a slight 35-30 edge in rebounds. Emma Burns paced the Crusaders with a team-best 17 points.
 
The win improves the Presidents to 5-2 overall. The loss drops the Crusaders' overall record to 3-2.
 
W&J travels to Saint Vincent College for the Presidents' Athletic Conference opener Wednesday, Dec. 4. Start time is scheduled for 5:30 p.m. The PAC Sports Network will be providing coverage of Wednesday night's conference doubleheader.
