Saxons, Propelled by Big First Quarter, Cruise to Victory Over Keuka

ALFRED, NY – The Alfred University women's basketball team hosted Keuka College on Tuesday evening. The Saxons (2-4) used a huge first quarter to cruise to a 63-42 win over the Wolves.

Impressive ball movement and play from both down low and on the perimeter helped AU gain a 24-11 advantage after the first quarter.

The Saxons continued their strong play into the second period and held Keuka to just 21 first half points to go into the break leading by 15.

Alfred did not let up after halftime and pushed its lead up to as many as 25 points at one time in the third quarter.

Both offenses were slow in the final quarter but the Saxons were already comfortably ahead and held the Wolves to just six points in the fourth to come away with the 21 point victory.

Gillian Flint (Caledonia, NY / Caledonia-Mumford) was impressive for the Saxons with a game high 21 points on 8 of 10 shooting. Flint finished with four three pointers, six rebounds and four steals. Bri Hicks (Burlington, VT / Ithaca) had a productive night on both ends with 12 points, six rebounds and two steals. Jamie Wilcox (Forestville, NY / Pine Valley) ended with eight points and six boards.

"It's always nice to get a win – it's a feeling that's unlike any other." Head Coach Mike Moskowitz said. "But to do it on our home court- by getting defensive stops, executing the game plan, staying focused and sticking together – that's an even better feeling. Proud of these young ladies for their resiliency and ability to bounce back from a really tough weekend. We showed some guts and toughness tonight that I hope can spring us forward for our last two games of the semester next week."

The Saxons will be back on the court a week from tonight as they travel to SUNY Geneseo next week for a matchup with the Knights at 7PM.
