3rd-quarter surge lifts UNE over Regis, 68-53

BIDDEFORD, Maine -- The University of New England women's basketball team began the 3rd period with an 18-3 run to seize control of the season-opener on the way to a 68-53 victory over Regis College (Mass.) on Friday night (Nov. 8) at the Harold Alfond Forum.

Abby Cavallaro drained a trio of three-pointers in the stretch that spanned more than half of the frame (6:13), while the Pride only registered three free throws as the deficit grew to 48-27. Regis closed to within nine (60-51) at the 2:52 mark of the 4th, but a Sadie Nelson three-point play padded the Nor'easter cushion back into double digits for good.

Cavallaro led the hosts with 14 points, six rebounds, five assists, and three steals. Rookie Katrina Krenzer chipped in with 12 points, and classmate Kaylee Beyor added seven points along with a game-best 11 rebounds. Nelson finished with 10 points and three steals, and Madalyn Sanborn tallied seven points with five boards.

For the visitors, who were held to 30-percent shooting (18-for-60) in the contest, Arie Searcy notched 14 points and four steals. Marissa Prall and Mackenzie Emery combined for 21 points in support, while Nikki Bitinaitis recorded 10 rebounds and eight assists.

The separation between the sides was no more than two for the entirety of the 1st quarter, which ended with a buzzer-beating corner three-pointer from Emery that shifted Regis in front, 15-13. However, UNE scored the initial eight of the 2nd to grab the permanent edge, and settled on a 30-24 margin at the midway break.
