ALFRED, NY – The Alfred University women's basketball team hosted Nazareth College on Tuesday evening in the regular season finale for both teams. The Saxons (8-17, 4-12) fell to the Golden Flyers by a score of 64-40.
After jumping out to a 10-9 lead, AU was shut out for the remainder of the first period as Nazareth went on 12-0 run to end the first quarter and lead 21-10.
Allison O'Toole (Simi Valley, CA/Simi Valley) and Bri Hicks (Burlington, VT/Ithaca) led AU on a 6-0 run to open the second quarter and pull within five points.
The Golden Flyers then turned up the heat once again and ended the half on an 18-3 run and led the Saxons 39-19 at the break.
Alfred buckled down throughout the second half and held Nazareth to just 13 points in the third quarter. Heading into the fourth Nazareth led Alfred 52-27.
The final period fell the way of the Saxons as they outscored Nazareth 13-12. Lyndsey McCoy (Middleburgh, NY/Middleburgh Central) hit a three in the final period to bring AU within 23 points.
"I feel like we took a lot of positive steps this year. This game was obviously a disappointment but I thought we competed better across the board," Head Coach Mike Moskowitz said. "We had some firsts in quite some time. I think our competition level and our fitness improved in that sense and those are going to be our cornerstones of our program as we move forward."
McCoy and O'Toole had nine points each to lead the AU scorers. Jamie Wilcox (Forestville, NY/Pine Valley) chipped in eight points and grabbed 10 rebounds.
The Saxons end their season having improved immensely from last season and finishing with their highest win total since the 2011-12 season.
