Cortland Women Lose 60-45 at Brockport; Teams to Meet Again in Cortland Tuesday in SUNYAC First Round

BROCKPORT, N.Y. – Emily Nestler recorded 19 points, 12 rebounds and four blocks as Brockport defeated Cortland, 60-45, in the regular-season finale for both teams.
 
The teams will meet again in Cortland Tuesday for the first round of the SUNYAC women's basketball tournament at a time to be announced. Cortland (12-13, 8-10 SUNYAC), Brockport (10-15, 8-10 SUNYAC) and Fredonia finished in a three-way tie for fourth place in the league standings. Cortland won the tiebreaker to earn the fourth seed and the right to host fifth-seeded Brockport. Fredonia is the sixth seed and will travel to third-seeded Oneonta Tuesday.
 
Shannon McGuire (West Babylon) scored a team-high 16 points and shared the team lead with seven rebounds and three assists for Cortland. Justine Crespo (Monroe/Monroe-Woodbury) finished with 10 points on 4-of-5 shooting and added four rebounds, Kristy Vitucci (Deer Park) had seven points, four boards and three assists, and Tanna Mohammed (Huntington/Elwood-John H. Glenn) matched McGuire with seven rebounds.
 
Julianna Taylor and Chelsea Henry joined Nestler in the double-figure scoring column for the Golden Eagles. Taylor finished with 13 points and eight rebounds and Henry had 12 points on 3-of-4 shooting. Kylee Rosbrook chipped in with six points and nine rebounds.
 
Brockport, which never trailed, led by seven points after one quarter and scored the first six points of the second period to take a 22-9 lead. Cortland rallied back to within a four-point margin at 25-21 on a McGuire free throw with 2:15 left in the half, but Brockport scored the last four points of the quarter to take a 29-21 lead.
 
The margin was still eight at 44-36 after a Crespo layup with 6:49 left in the fourth quarter. Taylor sank two free throws on Brockport's next possession, followed by a Henry layup with 5:52 remaining and a Taylor jumper at the 4:34 mark to give the hosts a 50-36 lead. The gap remained at least nine the rest of the way.
