More news about: Gettysburg

COLLEGEVILLE, Pa. A strong fourth quarter performance by the 23rd-ranked Gettysburg College women's basketball team pushed the Bullets past Centennial Conference opponent Ursinus College 82-70 on Tuesday night inside Helfferich Hall.

After trailing in the first and third quarter, the Bullets (18-3, 15-1 CC) outscored the Bears (13-8, 10-6 CC) 30-15 in the fourth quarter to remain perfect in road play.

Junior Ashley Gehrin (Chester, N.J./West Morris Mendham) poured out 24 points, nearly missing a new career-high after tallying 26 against Franklin & Marshall College last week. She finished 8-of-19 from the field, including 2-of-3 from three-point range, and 6-of-8 from the free throw line, and grabbed four rebounds. Senior Emma Dorshimer (Jenkintown, Pa./Jenkintown) added 22 points, six boards, and four assists, while shooting 7-of-11 overall, including 2-of-2 from beyond the arc, and 6-of-6 from the foul line.

Sophomore Meredith Brown (Landisburg, Pa./West Perry) posted her second double-double of the season with 10 points and 10 rebounds. Freshman Tori Yantsos (Rockville, Md./Holy Child) came off the bench to chip in nine points and two steals. Junior Emma Hahner (Forest Hill, Md./C. Milton Wright) snagged a season-high nine boards.

Lydia Konstanzer paced the Bears with 28 points and nine rebounds while Maya Kornfeld gathered 21 points.

The Bears wasted no time going to the basket as they collected their first set of points 10 seconds into the opening quarter, while notching another 31 seconds later to go up 4-0. Back-to-back layups by Gehrin engineered a 9-0 run for Gettysburg to pull ahead 9-4 with 4:49 showing. Ursinus fired back by going on a 12-6 run, including Maya Kornfeld sinking two free throws with 23 seconds left, to head into the second quarter up 16-15.

Ursinus held a six-point advantage, a quarter-high, with 4:38 left in the second quarter, but Gettysburg used a 6-0 run to tie the game at 28-28. A jumper by Konstanzer gave the hosts the lead, again, but in the last 38 seconds, Gehrin made a layup and freshman Seanna McNamara (Berwyn, Pa./TheEpiscopal Academy) hit a jumper as time expired to pull the Orange and Blue ahead 32-30 heading into the locker room.

The Bullets assembled a 7-0 run to open the third quarter with Dorshimer hitting back-to-back layups and a trey by Gehrin to extend the lead 39-30, forcing the Bears to call a timeout. After the 30 second timeout, the hosts went on to score 25 points, including three treys, while holding Gettysburg to 13 the rest of the quarter. Ursinus closed the period on an 8-2 run to lead 55-52 heading into the final period.

Both teams traded baskets to start the fourth quarter, but the Bullets took charge when Gehrin drove to the basket for a layup, sparking a 9-2 run that gave the Orange and Blue a 66-61 lead with under 6:34 to go. Ursinus came within five points on three different occasions after that, but Gettysburg continued to soar as they never trailed the rest of the contest. Gettysburg's stingy defense held Ursinus to 28.6 percent (4-of-14) from the floor, while the Bullets shot 58.3 percent (7-of-12). Dorshimer accounted for 13 points with Gehrin adding eight in the period to push the Bullets past the Bears.

Gettysburg out-rebounded the Bears 39-29 and shot a season-best 52.6 percent (30-of-57) from the field.

Gettysburg returns home on Thursday, when it hosts McDaniel College at 7 p.m. in another Centennial Conference affair.
