ROCHESTER, N.Y. - The Brandeis University bench outscored the Rochester bench, 21-9, and that was the difference as the visiting Judges posted a 56-52 victory over the University of Rochester in a women's basketball game at the Louis Alexander Palestra on Sunday afternoon.
The win snapped a four-game losing streak for the Judges. Brandeis is 7-10 overall, 3-4 in the University Athletic Association. Rochester, which had back to back wins over Case Western Reserve and NYU, is now 8-10 overall, 2-5 in the UAA.
Katherine Pud led Brandeis with 14 points. Sarah Jaromin scored 10. Camila Casanueva scored nine points. Maya Burris chipped in nine points off the bench. Lauren Rubeinstein, Joelle Markanthony, and Kerry Tanke had four apiece.
Julianna Okoniewski tied her career high with 21 points and set a rebounding career best with 14. Brenna James scored eight points. Shannon Loiseau had seven points, 16 rebounds, and five blocked shots. Okoniewski blocked three shots. Camryn Fagan had six points and six assists.
Brandeis took good care of the basketball with eight turnovers. It led to four Rochester points. The Yellowjackets lost the ball 13 times, leading to 15 Brandeis points.
Rochester grabbed 16 offensive rebounds and scored 13 second chance points. Brandeis had seven points from seven offensive rebounds.
Brandeis led, 18-13, after one and was up, 24-20, following two free throws from Kerry Tanke four minutes into the second half. Rochester ran off six straight points: one free throw by Lena Ethington, one from James, a runner in the lane by Fagan, and a 10-footer in the lane by Okoniewski. UR led, 26-24, at intermission.
The Judges scored seven of the first nine points after halftime to go up, 31-28. The lead grew to 38-33 with two minutes left after a followup by MarkAnthony and a driving layup from Jaromin. UR closed to one point twice straddling the third period intermission. Fagan hit a hook in the lane and Okoniewski sank an eight-footer just outside the lane. It was 40-39.
Burris hit a six-footer and MarkAnthony followed with a driving layup. Brandeis kept Rochester in a five-point deficit through the first five minutes of the last quarter: Jaromin hit a runner, Casanueva hit a 10 footer off the right baseline, and Hannah Nicholson made a layup (50-45 with 4:57 left.
Loiseau's layup and two free throws from Okoniewski pulled Rochestr within 50-49 with 2:41 on the clock. Jaromin drove for another layup with 2:25 to go. Burris made one from the line with less than 20 seconds to play. Okoniewski got a layup at 0:16.5 (53-51). Brandeis sank three of four at the stripe to clinch the victory.
Rochester goes to NYU next Friday and to Brandeis next Sunday on its turnaround weekend. The Yellowjackets will play five of their last seven on the road.
