Tough Offensive Day Leads to Loss at Stevens

More news about: Alfred

HOBOKEN, NJ – The Alfred University women's basketball team was defeated by Stevens Institute of Technology on Saturday afternoon. The Saxons (5-10, 1-5 Empire 8) were outdueled by the Ducks 55-41.

A three ball from Amanda Figueroa (Cypress, TX/Rosehill Christian) sent Alfred up 7-0 after two minutes of play. Following the quick start, it was tough sledding for the remainder of the opening period with AU only adding three more points and ending the quarter down 14-10.

The offense was even more difficult to come by in the second quarter as the Saxons were outscored 16-7, making the halftime score 30-17 in favor of Stevens.

The Ducks opened the second half with a 7-0 run to extend their lead to 18. A pair of three-pointers from Lyndsey McCoy (Middleburgh, NY/Middleburgh) and another from Chanice Battle (Brooklyn, NY/Midwood) helped fuel the offense and resulted in the Saxons outscoring the Ducks 17-13 in the third.

"We hung tough through a scoring drought in the first half and then cut it to 6 late in the third," Head Coach Mike Moskowitz said. "The key there was that we started playing with more confidence on the offensive end and a more focused effort on the defensive end."

Heading into the final quarter down 11, the Saxons had an opportunity to make a run and get back into the game but the offense became stagnant again as Stevens ended up with the 14-point victory.

"Today we showed some toughness and competed for very close to a full 40 minutes, which was nice to see," Moskowitz said.

McCoy was the high point getter for AU with nine. Samantha Pierre-Louis (Wheatley Heights, NY/Half Hollow Hills West)recorded a double-double with a season high eight points and 11 rebounds.

The Saxons will have a week off before returning home for a matchup with the Houghton Highlanders next Saturday at 2PM.
