Sewanee Women’s Basketball Unable to Recover From Second Half Struggles

BIRMINGHAM, Ala. - A strong third quarter by Birmingham-Southern was the story in Friday night's loss for Sewanee women's basketball, as the Tigers dropped the decision, 53-50, inside Bill Battle Coliseum.

HOW IT HAPPENED
-The contest started out on the right foot for the visitors, as the Tigers went on an 8-0 run before the Panthers broke the shutout.

-Birmingham-Southern made it a three-point deficit, 11-8, after the opening quarter.

-In the second stanza, Sewanee got its lead to as high as eight points en route to a 27-22 lead at the break.

-The third quarter was the story, as the home team went on a 14-2 run to take the lead for the first time and erased a five-point halftime deficit to a seven-point lead, 36-29, with 3:50 left in the period.

-Sewanee responded by dropping the deficit to two, 37-35, at the end of the third quarter.

-The Tigers regained the lead, 40-39, with 7:06 left in the final stanza on two free throws by Ellie Treanton, but the Panthers evened the score at 40 with a free throw by Emilee Olsen.

-With six minutes left, the Panthers took off again to secure the lead for good. The team went on a 9-2 run in about a 90-second span before Sewanee burned a timeout, trailing 51-44.

-Sewanee was able to score six of the final eight points of the game, but the Tigers came up short.

SEWANEE KEY STATISTICS
-Ellie Treanton dropped a career-best 18 points on 7-of-12 shooting. The freshman added eight rebounds.

-Bella Taylor contributed nine points and seven rebounds, five coming on the offensive glass.

BIRMINGHAM-SOUTHERN KEY STATISTICS
-Emilee Olsen nearly missed a double-double with 18 points, nine rebounds and three blocks.

-Derienne Black posted 16 points off the bench.
