St. Olaf tops Carleton

NORTHFIELD, Minn. – First year K'Lynn Lewis and junior Ella Skriencombined for 37 points as the St. Olaf College women's basketball team topped crosstown-rival Carleton, 73-54, in a Minnesota Intercollegiate Athletic Conference (MIAC) contest Wednesday evening at West Gym.

With the win, St. Olaf (6-10, 3-6) took home the President's Cup after Carleton (3-13, 0-9) earned it in the 2017-18 season after defeating the Oles at Skoglund Center.  The President's Cup is competed for once a year with the site rotating back and forth between the two locations.

The Oles outscored the Knights 42-26 and sank six three-pointers in the first half to help secure the victory.

Lewis led St. Olaf with 19 points, three assists and three rebounds, Skrien added 18 points, five rebounds, two assists and two steals and senior Makenna Ash reached recorded a double-double with 10 points and 17 rebounds.  Sophomore Keegan Mulvihill tallied nine points, six assists and two steals.

In the first quarter, the Oles jumped out a 14-6 lead after Mulvihill found first year Camryn Scott inside for basket with 4:59 remaining in the first quarter.  St. Olaf stretched their lead to as much as 12 points in the first period after junior Kelsie Gerovac finished a basket inside the paint.

Carleton started the second quarter on a 7-0 run and cut the deficit to three points after a layup from Cece Leone, while holding the Oles scoreless for the first 3:14 of the period. St. Olaf answered with a 10-0 run and took a 34-21 lead as Mulvihill found Lewis inside for a basket.  The Oles extended their lead to 16 points heading into the second half after Skrien sank a pair of free throws with less than 20 seconds remaining in the half to make the score 42-26.

A Lewis basket gave St. Olaf a 19-point lead at 7:58 in the third quarter, but a pair of free throws from Annabella Jensen brought Carleton within 14 points heading into the final period.

In the fourth quarter, the Knights score the first five points and made it a nine-point game after a three-point play from Leone, but the Oles responded with an 8-0 run and regained a 17-point lead after a layup from Mulvihill and 6:29 remaining in the contest.

Carleton would come within 14, but St. Olaf held the Knights to just two points in the final 5:38 of the game to secure the victory.

The Oles outrebounded the Knights 46-38 and sank 19-of-26 from the free throw in the contest, while forcing 17 Carleton turnovers.

St. Olaf is back to action on Saturday, January 19, as they host Augsburg in a MIAC contest in the first game of a double-header beginning at 1 p.m, with the men's game following at 3 p.m..
