- The Lead: A layup with 10 seconds remaining helped Springfield College defeat MIT, 58-57, in a NEWMAC women's basketball game on Saturday afternoon. Senior Kara Holinski (Livonia, Mich.) led all players with 21 points while grabbing six rebounds for the Engineers.
HOW IT HAPPENED:
- Springfield raced out to an 11-2 lead but a layup by sophomore Kylie Gallagher (Upton, Mass.) kicked off a 13-4 run, tying the score at 15. The Pride then knocked down a three-pointer to take a small edge into the second quarter.
- A put-back by sophomore Jocelyn Luizzi (Colchester, Conn.) brought MIT within 18-17, however, Springfield rattled of six straight points to create some breathing room. The Engineers replied with seven unanswered points as Holinski's trey knotted the game at 24 with 4:22 on the clock. The Pride countered with a 9-3 spurt, entering the intermission with a 33-27 lead.
- On the strength of a 16-3 run, MIT outscored Springfield, 20-9, in the third quarter and built a 47-42 advantage at the end of the frame.
- Springfield responded by generating a 10-3 run during the first four minutes of the fourth quarter. A layup by Holinski evened the score at 52 with 4:40 left but the Pride went ahead courtesy of a layup over a minute later. The Engineers capitalized on a free throw by senior Dolly Yuan (San Jose, Calif.) and a jumper from classmate Taylor V'Dovec (Blaine, Wash.) to go in front, 55-54, with 2:18 remaining.
- During the next minute, the hosts sank a layup which was matched by another Holinski basket, preserving the visitors' one-point edge with 1:19 to go. After unsuccessful possessions by both teams, Springfield drained the game-winning layup with 10 ticks left. Following its own timeout, MIT's final attempt with two seconds remaining was off the mark.
INSIDE THE NUMBERS:
- Gallagher led all players with a career-high 14 rebounds to go along with two blocks. Yuan finished with 10 points and four assists while Luizzi chipped in seven points and five rebounds.
- MIT shot 36.8 percent (21-of-57) from the floor, 31.6 percent (6-of-19) from three-point range, and was 9-of-14 from the free-throw line. Springfield, meanwhile, shot 36.2 percent (21-of-58) from the floor, was 2-of-10 from behind the arc and 14-of-15 from the charity stripe.
