NORTHFIELD, Minn. – Visiting Concordia College (Minn.) hit 15 three-pointers and had five players in double figures to defeat the St. Olaf College women's basketball team, 81-72, on Saturday afternoon at Skoglund Center.
St. Olaf (5-8, 2-4 MIAC) raced out to a 25-11 lead after the first quarter and led by 19 early in the second quarter, but Concordia (6-7, 3-3 MIAC) hit 14 three-pointers over the final three quarters and shot 18-for-20 (90.0 percent) from the free-throw line in the second half to rally for the road victory.
First year K'Lynn Lewis scored a game-high 19 points to lead four double-digit scorers for the Oles. Junior Ella Skrien drained three three-pointers on her way to 13 points. Senior Makenna Ash recorded her seventh double-double of the season with 11 points, 16 rebounds and four assists, while sophomore Keegan Mulvihill pitched in with 10 points, seven rebounds, four assists and four steals.
St. Olaf jumped out to a 15-2 lead over the first 5:05 of the game, holding Concordia scoreless for a stretch of 5:26 after the Cobbers scored on their first possession. Trailing by 13, the Cobbers scored the next seven points to get within six but back-to-back layups by Mulvihill and Lewis quickly got the lead back to double figures for the Oles.
First year Rose Bauernfiend and junior Allyson Fuller hit back-to-back three-pointers late in the first quarter to push the St. Olaf lead to 25-11 after 10 minutes. Junior Britta Koenen scored five points in the first 43 seconds of the second to give the Oles their largest lead of the game at 30-11 before the Cobbers hit six three-pointers in the span of five and a half minutes to trail just 32-29 with 2:09 left in the half. Three-pointers from Skrien and Lewis in the final 1:22 of the half sent the Oles to the break ahead 38-29.
Concordia again got within three two minutes into the third, but St. Olaf extended its lead back to 11 with 3:50 to go in the quarter after limiting the Cobbers to two points in a four-minute span. The visitors hit four of their final five three-pointers in the third quarter to knot the score at 51-51 going into the fourth.
A layup by Amber Lingen six seconds into the fourth quarter gave the Cobbers their first lead of the game and they extended their lead to seven after a Bradyn Dresser three-pointer with 7:21 left. Consecutive three-pointers by Mulvihill and Lewis brought St. Olaf within one, 63-62, with 3:47 left but that was as close the Oles would get, as Concordia made all 14 of its free throws in the final 1:26.
Mira Ellefson paced the Cobbers with 16 points and six rebounds while shooting 4-for-8 from behind the arc. Lingen (14), Dresser (13), Grace Wolhowe (12) and Elizabeth Birkemeyer (10) were all in double figures for Concordia, which shot 13-for-26 (50.0 percent) from the floor in the second half.
St. Olaf enjoyed a 28-4 advantage in points in the paint, but Concordia countered with a 29-14 edge in bench points. The teams combined to make 26 three-pointers in the game, with the Oles making a season-high 11 in addition to the Cobbers' 15 makes.
St. Olaf hosts Macalester College on Wednesday, Jan. 9 at 5 p.m. at the Skoglund Center. The Oles defeated the Scots, 78-64, in St. Paul earlier this season on Dec. 1.
