Meadville, Pa. - Host Allegheny got out to a 13-5 lead in the opening six minutes against #21/22 DePauw, but the Tigers gained control the rest of the way and claimed a 72-50 North Coast Athletic Conference win. The Tigers improved to 10-3 overall and 4-0 in the NCAC, while the Gators slipped to 5-7 overall and 1-2 in the conference.
Allegheny scored six straight early to grab a 13-5 lead with 3:56 left in the first before DePauw trimmed the deficit to 18-15 at the quarter break.
Maya Howard opened DePauw's scoring in the second with a 3-pointer and Mya Shannon added a jumper to give DePauw its first lead of the game at 20-18. That was a lead the Tigers wouldn't relinquish as Julianna Skowron knotted the contest at 20-20 before DePauw closed the half on a 14-5 run to lead at the intermission, 34-25.
The Gators briefly closed to within seven, but DePauw scored the next nine capped by Hayley Cange's layup which extended the Tigers' lead to 43-27 with 6:46 remaining in the third. DePauw expanded that to 53-30 as the teams moved to the final stanza.
Howard led DePauw with 18 points, while Shannon notched a career high with 16 and Sydney Kopp added 10. Rylee Donovan paced the Gators with 20 points and Skowron added 15.
DePauw outrebounded Allegheny, 53-37, and were paced by Cange's career-high 11 boards. Skowron had nine caroms for the Gators.
The Tigers connected on 40.3 percent from the field to Allegheny's 32.2 percent and committed 12 turnovers to the Gators' 16.
DePauw returns to play tomorrow with a 2 p.m. NCAC contest at Hiram.
