The University of Wisconsin-Whitewater women's basketball team built a double-digit lead in the third quarter and hung on despite a rally by the opposition Wednesday night for a 68-62 victory at Concordia Wisconsin in a non-conference affair in Mequon.
The Warhawks (6-3 overall), who are now 6-0 in games played away from home, including 4-0 in true road games, led by as many as 17 points in the third quarter before the Falcons tied the contest with 2:50 to play in the fourth.
UW-Whitewater concluded the game with a 6-0 run, including four made free throws, holding Concordia without a basket and forcing two turnovers.
Senior center Becky Deichl posted a game-high 17 points to go along with five rebounds and four blocks. Sophomore guard Emily Schumacher totaled 14 points, four rebounds and two steals, and senior forward Olivia Freckmann grabbed a game-high 10 rebounds.
Sophomore guard Adriana Green registered nine points and two rebounds for the Warhawks, who out-rebounded the Falcons (4-4) by a 46-32 margin.
UW-Whitewater scored the first five points of the game, but Concordia responded to tie the contest at 11-11 midway through the first quarter. The Falcons led the Warhawks 19-15 by the end of the period.
Concordia built its lead to as many as seven in the second, but UW-Whitewater rattled off eight straight points to turn a six-point deficit into a 31-29 advantage on a layup by Schumacher with 1:48 left in the half. The Warhawks maintained their two-point lead into halftime.
UW-Whitewater started the third quarter on an 11-0 run, including five straight from Schumacher. A layup by Deichl capped the run and gave the team a 45-32 lead with 6:12 on the clock.
Deichl scored five straight Warhawk points to run the team's lead to 50-33 at the 4:18 mark. A layup by Green 40 seconds later made it a 17-point advantage again.
The Falcons whittled their deficit down to nine by the end of the frame, and trailed by only two points three minutes into the fourth.
Four points by Deichl helped UW-Whitewater build its lead back to seven with 4:40 remaining before Concordia embarked on a 7-0 run to tie the game and set up the Warhawks' final run.
UW-Whitewater wraps up regular season non-conference play Dec. 28-29 at Transylvania University's Pat Deacon Classic. The Warhawks open the two-day tournament on the 28th against No. 11 Trine (Ind.) at 4 p.m. Central Time in Lexington, Ky.
