(HOLLAND, Mich.) – The fourth-ranked Thomas More University women's basketball team upset second-ranked Hope College, 81-61, today (Saturday, December 15, 2018) on the Flying Dutch's home court in the championship game of the Post Exam Jam at the DeVos Fieldhouse in Holland, Michigan. The Saints remain undefeated at 13-0 and the Flying Dutch fall to 7-1.
FIRST HALF:
- The Saints led 23-11 after the first quarter and 41-22 at halftime.
- Thomas More shot 61.1 percent (18-of-29) from the field in the half, including 41.7 percent (five-of-12) from behind the three-point arc.
- The Saints held Hope to 25.0 percent (eight-of-32) from the field and 11.1 percent (one-of-nine) from three-point range.
- Junior forward Emily Schultz (Melbourne, Ky./Bishop Brossart) led the team in scoring with 12 points in the half.
- Junior guard Kaela Saner (Florence, Ky./Boone County) added nine points.
- Senior guard Madison Temple (Cincinnati, Ohio/Anderson) had eight rebounds and six assists in the half to go with five points.
SECOND HALF:
- Thomas More out-scored the Flying Dutch 22-18 in the third quarter to extend the lead to 63-40 after three quarters.
- The Saints led by as many as 26 points in the third quarter.
- Temple had 10 points and five rebounds in the half.
- Schultz had nine points in the second half
- Saner tallied six points in the third and fourth quarter.
- Senior forward Shelby Rupp (Milan, Ind./Batesville) had six points and 10 rebounds in the in the half.
NOTABLES:
- Thomas More shot 47.8 percent (32-of-67) from the field.
- The Saints had a 47-29 advantage on the boards.
- Thomas More out-scored Hope 38-24 in the paint and 16-13 on second chance points.
- Schultz led the team in scoring with 21 points, while she pulled down eight rebounds and had two blocked shots.
- Temple recorded a double-double with 15 points and 13 rebounds, while dishing out eight assists.
- Rupp also had a double-double with 12 points and 12 rebounds.
- Saner finished the game with 15 points.
- At the conclusion of the tournament, Temple was named the Most Valuable Player and Saner was named to the All-Tournament Team.
