MARSHALL, Texas – Holding the Sul Ross State University to 28% shooting throughout the game, the #12/14 East Texas Baptist University women's basketball team used three 20+ point quarters on their way to an 82-54 victory over the Lobos inside Ornelas Gym. This win puts ETBU at 8-1 overall and 2-1 in the American Southwest Conference East Division.
ETBU had four players reach double-digits with the leading scorer coming from Kendrick Clark, who posted 13 points while Valerie Matlock, Amanda Wilson, and Kayla Bise each scored 12 points. Anna Moss collected a team-high seven rebounds while Sydney Saxton dished out three assists. SRSU posted the two highest scorers in the game with Makayla Hamilton scoring 20 points while Chandre Nunez had 16.
Shooting 50.8% from the field, the Tigers made 30.4% from the three-point line while SRSU made 22.7%. ETBU outscored SRSU 46-20 in the paint, 40-9 from the bench, and 20-14 off fast break points. Another margin of victory for ETBU was the 48-30 edge in total rebounds.
ETBU started the game scoring the first twelve points (10:00-5:40) as Wilson had half of them (8:52, 8:10, 6:45) in the stretch. The Lobos finally got on the board at 5:27 as they would manage to cut the deficit to 16-6 (2:18) with a 6-4 run. But before the Lobos could keep clawing back into the game, Bise would finish the quarter for the Tigers with back-to-back three's (1:35, 0:07), which completed a 6-2 surge to give the Tigers a 22-8 lead through one quarter.
The momentum carried over into the second quarter as ETBU ran off seven straight points (10:00-8:34) to grab a 29-8 lead on Wilson free throws (9:40), a three by Taylor Singleton (9:12), and a Matlock layup (8:34) pushed the lead to 21 points. SRSU answered with a run of eight straight points (8:13-6:18) before Clark stopped the run (6:03) with a layup. This led to a 10-2 run (5:00-3:02) in which the top three scorers propelled the Tigers up to 41-18. By halftime, ETBU's lead grew to 45-20 after a 23-point second quarter.
Trading points early in the third quarter, ETBU's lead grew to as high as twenty-eight at 52-24 with key threes from Bise (6:52), who followed that with her fourth three of the game (5:40) to lead 57-30. April Matthews also played a key role in the quarter with four points (6:02, 5:07). Following a free throw from SRSU (0:41) to cut the lead to 61-37, ETBU managed to score four points from free throws by Tatyana Lacey (0:27) and a jumper from Kim Childress (0:02) for a 65-37 edge after three.
Paige Royal would key ETBU's first seven points (9:25-8:40) with five of her own to increase the lead to 72-35. Childress would manage to get her second field goal (6:45) that brought the score to 75-41. SRSU came within 30 points with a 7-2 run (5:20-3:19) trailing 78-48. After free throws by Bianca Bowring (2:16) pushed the score to 82-49, the Lobos would get to 48 points with five straight as ETBU secured the 82-54 win.
The Tigers remain in Ornelas Gym this Monday night as they host Howard Payne University at 5:30 PM.
