Lewis scores 26 as St. Olaf downs crosstown-rival Carleton

NORTHFIELD, Minn. - First year K'Lynn Lewis netted a career-high 26 points to propel the St. Olaf College women's basketball team to a 77-59 victory over crosstown-rival Carleton College on Wednesday evening in Minnesota Intercollegiate Athletic Conference (MIAC) play at Skoglund Center.

After a scoreless first quarter, Lewis caught fire in the second, scoring 14 points in the quarter for St. Olaf (4-4, 2-0 MIAC). After Carleton (3-5, 0-2 MIAC) tied the game at 28-28 late in the second, the Oles scored the final 15 points of the half and led by double figures the rest of the way.

Lewis scored her 26 points on 8-for-15 shooting from the field, going 4-for-7 from behind the arc and 6-for-10 from the free-throw line. Senior Makenna Ash recorded her third double-double in a row and her fourth of the season with a season-high 18 points and 14 boards. Junior Ella Skrien pitched in with 15 points on 5-for-10 from the floor.

After Ash opened the scoring, Carleton scored the next six points to take an early lead until an Ash three-point play put the Oles on top, 7-6, with 5:56 remaining. Ash scored 10 of St. Olaf's 14 points in the opening quarter and also grabbed seven rebounds, as the Oles carried a 14-10 advantage into the second.

A three-pointer by Lewis with 6:15 left in the second quarter gave St. Olaf a 28-23 lead, the largest of the game at the time. The Knights responded by scoring the next five points to tie it up, but St. Olaf scored the last 15 points of the half to take a 43-28 halftime lead.

Lewis was 5-for-7 from the field and 3-for-4 from behind the arc in the second quarter, while Skrien had 11 of her 15 in the quarter, including back-to-back three-pointers in the final 1:09 of the half to finish off the run. Lewis and Skrien combined to score 25 of the Oles' 29 points in the second quarter.

In the third, Lewis accounted for 10 of St. Olaf's 14 points to help the Oles outscore the Knights, 14-12, despite shooting just 4-for-15 from the floor. Carleton got within 11 points at 48-37 with 6:23 left in the third, but St. Olaf scored the next nine points to stretch the lead back to 20.

St. Olaf led by as many as 27 points in the fourth quarter, as seven Oles scored in the final 10 minutes.

Anna Hughes led Carleton with 15 points and seven rebounds, going 5-for-9 from three-point range. Jill Yanai added 14 points off the bench to go with six rebounds.

The victory was St. Olaf's third in a row, marking the program's first three-game winning streak since Dec. 10-31, 2016.

The Oles return to the court on Saturday, Dec. 8 when the travel to St. Catherine University for a 1 p.m. tipoff against the Wildcats.
