HAVERFORD, Pa. – Senior Emma Dorshimer (Jenkintown, Pa./Jenkintown) took over as the all-time leader in 3-pointers made as the 20th-ranked Gettysburg College women's basketball team won its fourth straight Centennial Conference game in a thrilling showdown at Haverford College on Saturday afternoon 55-52.
The Bullets (6-1, 4-0 CC) have won the last five meetings against the Fords (6-1, 3-1 CC).
Dorshimer broke the program's career record at the 5:41 marker in the third quarter which pushed her past Dana Bear '04, who held the record at 186. Today she finished the game with 187 career 3-pointers made. Dorshimer, who is ninth in Division III in points per game, garnered her second straight double-double with 20 points, hitting 3-of-4 from beyond the arc, and 10 rebounds. With her 20-point performance, she has now netted over 1,400 career points (1,413) and currently ranks sixth all-time in Gettysburg history.
For the third straight game, junior Ashley Gehrin (Chester, N.J./West Morris Mendham) has tallied double-digit scoring. She finished with 16 points and grabbed a career-tying nine rebounds (6 defensive, 3 offensive). Freshman Christina Richson (Summit, N.J./Summit) registered a season-high nine points off the bench, making three 3-pointers in five minutes of action, while sophomore Meredith Brown (Landisburg, Pa./West Perry) snagged nine boards.
Three players collected double-figure scoring for Haverford with Anna-Sophia Capizzi leading the team with 16 points. Macy Goldbach and Julianna Clark produced 13 and 11 points, respectively.
In a rematch from last season's Centennial Conference championship game, the Bullets and the Fords made it come right down to the wire in the fourth quarter. With 4:42 left, Dorshimer put the Bullets ahead 52-50 off a layup. For the next several minutes, neither team scored until the 30-second marker when the hosts Macy Goldbach made her first free throw to cut the deficit in half. Missing her second free throw, Dorshimer grabbed the rebound, and the Bullets called a timeout. The scoring continued at the free throw line as Gehrin was fouled with 10 seconds to go, sending her to the charity stripe. Gehrin netted both of the crucial free throws to push the advantage by three (54-51). Haverford's Katie Cook missed her first but made the second free throw with five seconds left. Gettysburg called a 30-second timeout, and the Fords quickly fouled Dorshimer, sending her to the free throw line. Dorshimer missed the first but made the second and another timeout was called, this time, by the Fords. The Fords had one last opportunity to force the game into overtime as Anna-Sophia Capizzi took the final 3-point attempt as time expired, but missed, giving the Bullets the nail-biting victory.
The Bullets and Fords traded baskets throughout the first four minutes of action. With 5:53 on the clock, Dorshimer tied the game at 10-10 off a layup. From there, the Fords spurted a 9-2 run to take the 19-12 advantage at the end of the first quarter. The Fords shot 50 percent from the field.
Gettysburg came out electric in the second quarter as they rallied back to outscore Haverford 20-9. Richson knocked down three 3-pointers to lift the Bullets to a 32-28 advantage at intermission. The Bullets shot an astonishing 53.3 percent in the frame and held the hosts to 25 percent shooting from the floor. Gettysburg also took the 14-6 rebounding battle.
A trey by Dorshimer pushed the Bullets lead by 11 (41-30), the highest of the game, with 5:41 left in the third quarter. The Fords then creeped their way back into the game by emerging on a 12-5 run to close the frame. Dorshimer and Gehrin were the only two Bullets to score with eight and five points, respectively.
