Montclair St. Cruises to Fourth Straight Victory, 74-40

Montclair, NJ – Junior forward Alex McKinnon scored 14 points and grabbed eight rebounds as Montclair State recorded its fourth straight victory, cruising past Ramapo College 74-40 at the Panzer Athletic Center on Wednesday evening.

Senior forward Domonique Wirsing added 11 points, five rebounds, three blocks and four steals as the Red Hawks improved to 5-1 on the season, 2-0 in conference play. Alie Wickersheim had seven points and a game-high 12 rebounds for the Roadrunners (4-2, 0-2 NJAC).

Taylor Brown and Kim Calloway helped give MSU and early 4-0 lead before the Roadrunners tied the game at 4-4 with 6:52 left on a bucket by Cherie Smedile. Wirsing put the Red Hawks back in front and a jumper by Calloway made the score 10-5 two minutes later. Ramapo closed within a point however back-to-back field goals by Wirsing and McKinnon gave MSU a 14-9 lead at the end of one.

The Roadrunners got the first points of the second quarter before Montclair State tallied the next seven to build a 10-point lead three minutes into the new period. Wirsing converted a three-point play and McKinnon score for a 21-11 advantage. A Wirsing layup later pushed the lead to 28-15 and consecutive three-pointers by Rylee Mulligan and Calloway in the final 90 seconds sent MSU into the halftime break with a 34-18 lead.

Montclair State held on to that advantage and increased it in the third outscoring Ramapo 23-9 in the period. Julia Sutton hit a short jumper in the paint for a 57-31 lead heading into the final quarter.

Brown and Calloway each finished with nine points for the Red Hawks, who also got eight points off the bench from Kelly Smith and seven from Sutton. Montclair saw 10 different players score in the contest. Kayla Bush pulled down six rebounds. MSU also took advantage of 23 turnovers by Ramapo turning those miscues into 26 points.

Montclair State returns to action on Saturday, December 1 as it travels to Kean University to face the Cougars in a 3:00 pm NJAC matchup at Harwood Arena.
