No. 17 Warhawks Earn Another Road Win

The No. 17 ranked University of Wisconsin-Whitewater women's basketball team parlayed a strong third quarter into another non-conference victory on the road Wednesday night, besting Augustana 75-67 in Rock Island, Ill.

 

The Warhawks (4-1 overall) outscored the Vikings 23-12 in the third, holding Augustana to 5-of-15 shooting from the floor in the period to pick up their second straight win on a College Conference of Illinois and Wisconsin opponent's home floor. (at No. 12 Illinois Wesleyan on Nov. 20)

 

Four players scored in double figures for UW-Whitewater, led by junior guard Becky Raeder, who registered 19 points on 7-of-10 shooting from the floor. Sophomore guard Adriana Green collected a career-best 13 points and two steals, and sophomore guard Emily Schumacher posted 12 points and six rebounds.

 

Senior center Becky Deichl tallied 11 points and three rebounds, and senior forward Olivia Freckmann grabbed a team-best 13 rebounds and added six points and one steal.

 

The Warhawks out-rebounded Augustana 42-31, including 16-6 on the offensive glass that led to 17 second-chance points, and shot 21-of-27 (77.8 percent) from the free-throw line. UW-Whitewater also committed only eight turnovers and scored 17 fast-break points.

 

The Warhawks started the game on an 8-3 run through the first two minutes, 29 seconds of the contest. Senior forward Sarah Schumacher tallied five points during the spurt.

 

The Vikings (3-3) responded to tie the game at 10-10, the UW-Whitewater held a 16-13 advantage through one quarter as Raeder knocked down a jumper to account for the margin.

 

Augustana scored six points in the first minute of the second quarter to surge ahead 19-16, and the two teams traded the lead throughout the period. A pair of free throws by senior center Becky Deichl with 32 seconds left gave the Warhawks a 32-29 halftime advantage.

 

Emily Schumacher hit back-to-back 3-pointers to open the second half, giving UW-Whitewater a 38-31 advantage at the 8:20 mark of the third quarter.

 

The Warhawks finished the period on an 11-2 run as five different players scored during the span.

 

UW-Whitewater made 8-of-12 from the free-throw line in the fourth to help hold off the Vikings, who shot 50 percent in the quarter.

 

The Warhawks host fourth-ranked Thomas More (Ky.) Saturday at 3 p.m. on Parents/Family Day at Kachel Gymnasium.
