COLORADO SPRINGS, Colo. – First year K'Lynn Lewis scored a career-high 19 points, but the St. Olaf College women's basketball team fell to Colorado College, 91-71, in its first game at the Rocky Mountain Thanksgiving Classic Friday afternoon at Reid Arena.
Lewis scored 14 of her career-high 19 points in the first half for St. Olaf (1-4), but Colorado College (3-1) sank 9-of-14 from behind the arc and 62.1 percent from the floor on its way to a 52-37 lead at the break. After trailing by as many as 20, the Oles climbed to within nine, 68-59, with 8:12 remaining in the game before the Tigers pulled away over the final minutes.
Lewis led the Oles with 19 points, four rebounds, three assists and two steals, while junior Ella Skrien posted 12 points, five rebounds, three steals and two assists. Sophomore Keegan Mulvihill added nine points, seven rebounds, two steals and one assist, while senior Makenna Ash and junior Britta Koenen also contributed nine points.
The Tigers made 10 of their first 13 shots from the field, including their first five three-point attempts, on their way to a 29-15 lead after the first quarter. Colorado College led by as many as 20, 49-29, with 1:49 left in the first half before an 8-3 run by St. Olaf to close the half made it a 52-37 game at the half.
The Oles got to the free-throw line 24 times in the opening half, including 18 times in the second quarter, but made just 11. For the game, St. Olaf shot 16-for-32 (50.0 percent) at the line, compared to 28-for-31 (90.3 percent) for Colorado College.
St. Olaf scored five points in the first 30 seconds of the third quarter after Lewis finished a layup and Koenen sank a three-pointer to bring the Oles within 10 at 52-42. Colorado College responded with a pair of free throws and a three-pointer to regain a 15-point lead.
A three-pointer from Bauernfeind brought the Oles within 11 of the Tigers with 2:15 remaining in the third quarter after the Tigers had increased their lead back to 17. Colorado College ended the third quarter with a 13-point lead at 68-55 after a late jumper by Skrien.
In the fourth quarter, St. Olaf trailed by just nine after a fast-break layup by Skrien but Colorado College quickly got the lead back to 13 after making four consecutive free throws. Skrien had six of her 12 points in the final 10 minutes, including a layup with 6:33 left to make it an 11-point game, but the Tigers held on the rest of the way by shooting 15-for-17 at the free-throw line in the fourth quarter.
St. Olaf outrebounded Colorado College, 42-39, in the game, led by Mulvihill's seven rebounds. The Tigers turned 22 Ole turnovers into 31 points and enjoyed a 33-13 advantage in bench scoring.
McKenzee Gertz had a double-double of 22 points, 13 rebounds and five assists for Colorado College, which got 17 points from Casey Torbet. Izzy Hensley hit four three-pointers off the Tiger bench for 12 points, while Jade Odom added 11 points, five rebounds and five assists.
The Oles are back to action Saturday, Nov. 24 against Johnson & Wales (Colo.) at 1 p.m. CT for their final contest at the Rocky Mountain Thanksgiving Classic.
