- The Lead: Powered by a pair of 20-point performances, the MIT women's basketball team defeated Endicott College, 65-57, in non-conference action on Sunday afternoon. Sophomore Kylie Gallagher (Upton, Mass.) totaled 20 points and a game-high 11 rebounds as senior Kara Holinski (Livonia, Mich.) posted 20 points and four assists for the Engineers.
HOW IT HAPPENED:
- The first quarter and a half were a back-and-forth affair as there were six lead changes and four ties. Trailing 22-20, two free throws by Gallagher sparked a 13-0 run during the final 4:34 of the second quarter that gave MIT a lead it would not relinquish.
- The Engineers maintained a comfortable cushion throughout the third quarter as a jumper by senior Kristen Ngan (Sudbury, Mass.) created a 53-37 advantage with four seconds left in the frame.
- A layup by Gallagher 34 seconds into the final quarter resulted in MIT's largest lead of the day. However, Endicott battled back, closing the gap to 59-52 with 3:11 left to play. A layup from senior Dolly Yuan (San Jose, Calif.) on the Engineers' next trip down the court and then a free throw by senior Taylor V'Dovec (Blaine, Wash.) a minute later reestablished the double-digit lead.
- An exchange of baskets ensued as a three-pointer by the Gulls trimmed the deficit to 64-57 with 10 seconds remaining in the game. Freshman Christina Antonakakis (Holmdel, N.J.) capped by the scoring by making the first of two free throws with three ticks left.
INSIDE THE NUMBERS:
- Ngan finished with nine points and two blocks while Antonakakis dished out a game-high eight assists.
- Senior Sophie Gershon (New York, N.Y.) produced six rebounds and three blocks coming off the bench.
