No. 6-ranked St. Thomas Women's Basketball had an off night in 3-point and free-throw shooting and it proved costly in Friday night's 61-58 overtime loss to East Texas Baptist in a Sweet 16-round playoff game in Waverly, Iowa.

Junior Hannah Spaulding finished with 28 points and 11 rebounds for the Tommies (27-3), who had a 20-game win streak halted.

St. Thomas came in ranked in the top five nationally in all three shooting categories but made just 6-of-23 from behind the arc and 6-of-14 at the foul line. In two NCAA playoff wins last week UST made 27-of-28 at the foul line.

ETBU (25-6), which had no players score in double figures in a balanced attack, made 13-of-17 at the foul line and survived 22 turnovers as it rode a 34-7 edge in bench points. The Texas team led by 11 early and was up by four at halftime. ETBU banked in a trey at the end of the third quarter at the buzzer for a five-point lead.

St. Thomas rallied from a late 50-40 deficit to tie the game, and later missed a potential game-winning trey near the end of regulation.

The Toms tied the game in overtime 58-58 on Kaylie Brazil's 3-point basket with 25 seconds to go. The winners missed a go-ahead shot but Erin Meeks got the offensive board and was fouled with :03 left. Meeks missed the first but made the second free throw for a 59-58 lead. The Toms had a turnover while inbounding with 2.8 seconds to go and missed a chance at a winning shot attempt. After a foul and two ETBU free throws, UST had another desperation try down three with :01 left but A trey from the corner was blocked as the buzzer sounded.

Brazil finished with 10 points, and Lauren Fischer scored eight. Fischer and fellow senior Maddie Wolkow finished their Tommie careers with a four-year record of 114-9, best in school history for any senior class.
