FREDERICKSBURG, Va. - Marymount women's basketball senior Leah Hurst scored her 1,000th career point en route to a team-high 11 points as the No. 22/20 Saints concluded the CAC regular season with a 49-36 victory over Mary Washington Saturday at Ron Rosner Arena.
With the win and Christopher Newport's loss to York (Pa.), Marymount (21-3, 16-1 CAC) wins the CAC regular season championship and will be the top-seed in next week's CAC Women's Basketball Championship. The Saints will host a semifinal game next Thursday, February 22 at Verizon Sports Arena. With a win, the Saints would host the CAC championship game at home on Saturday, February 24.
Hurst is the second player to score 1,000 career points this season after senior Nicole Viscuso also scored a team-high 11 points at Catholic on December 30. Hurst added seven rebounds and five assists.
Sophomore Regan Lohr also scored 11 points while freshman Kathryn Ryan scored 10 off the bench on 4-of-6 shooting from the floor. Ryan has scored in double digits in two of her last four games and finished one point shy of her career high.
The Eagles (13-11, 12-5 CAC) took a 6-4 lead with 6:12 left in the first quarter, but the Saints used a 7-0 run to take an 11-6 lead while holding Mary Washington scoreless for a span of 5:18.
Marymount would never trail again and took a 27-20 lead into halftime. Ryan scored eight of her 10 points in the first half while Lohr added seven.
The Saints took a 41-31 lead on a jump shot by Viscuso with 9:26 remaining in the fourth quarter before stretching that to as many as 13 on a lay-up by Hurst with 3:18 left.
Hurst scored her 1,000th career point on a jump shot with 5:25 to play in the third that gave Marymount a 34-28 lead.
