Cortland Women Clinch SUNYAC Third Seed With 78-71 OT Win vs. Brockport

CORTLAND, N.Y. - The Cortland women's basketball team recovered after letting a 13-point lead slip away over the final 6:40 of regulation and the Red Dragons defeated Brockport, 78-71 in overtime, to clinch the third seed in the upcoming SUNYAC tournament.

Cortland (15-10, 12-6 SUNYAC) will host sixth-seeded Buffalo State in the quarterfinals Tuesday at 5:30 p.m., followed by the Red Dragon men hosting a quarterfinal at 7:30 p.m. The Cortland/Buffalo State winner will play second-seeded Oneonta on Friday at 5:30 p.m. in a semifinal game hosted by top-seeded Geneseo.

Kerry McHugh (Monroe/Monroe-Woodbury) led Cortland with 24 points, eight rebounds and five assists. She was 5-of-9 from the 3-point arc and 9-of-17 overall. Kristy Vitucci (Deer Park) scored six of her18 points in overtime and added six rebounds, while Taylor Miller (Freeport) shot 6-of-9 from the field with two 3-pointers and ended with 14 points, five rebounds and four steals. Shana Crespo (Monroe/Monroe-Woodbury) chipped in with 10 points, five rebounds and three steals, and Justine Crespo (Monroe/Monroe-Woodbury) scored eight points. Both Crespo sisters, however, fouled out prior to overtime. Joka Oyefeso (Staten Island/Port Richmond) blocked four shots, two in overtime.

McHugh and Miller, Cortland's two seniors, were honored after the game along with student intern coach Eric Fluty.

Brockport (12-13, 10-8 SUNYAC) will be the fifth seed in the six-team SUNYAC tournament and will travel to fourth-seeded New Paltz Tuesday for the quarterfinals. The Golden Eagles were led by Lindsay Johnson's 18 points and 15 rebounds and Schyler Laux's 16 points. Laux made four 3-pointers, including a deep trey with 13 seconds left in the fourth that sent the game to overtime.

Cortland opened up an 11-point halftime lead, 45-34, on a Vitucci 3-pointer in the closing seconds of the half, and led by as many as 14 points in the third quarter. Brockport, however, cut the margin to 10 when Bailey Pratt made approximately a 40-foot 3-pointer at the buzzer.

The Red Dragons led 66-53 on a McHugh 3-pointer with 6:49 left in regulation, but the Golden Eagles finished the period on a 14-1 run. Julianna Taylor hit a jumper with 2:53 left to pull Brockport within six. She added a free throw at the 2:06 mark, and her layup with 1:25 remaining made it a 67-64 game. Laux's trey knotted the game with 13 seconds on the clock. Cortland missed two attempts at a winning shot during the final seven seconds of regulation.

Emily Nestler's free throw with 4:18 left in overtime gave Brockport its first lead since the 4:43 mark of the first quarter, but Vitucci answered with a layup nine seconds later and Cortland never relinquished the lead. Cortland led 71-69 with three minutes left and scored its final seven points from the foul line, including four by Vitucci and two by Alaina Lynch (Staten Island/Staten Island Tech).
