MADISON (NJ) – Five-time defending Middle Atlantic Conference (MAC) Freedom champion remained in first place heading into the final week of the regular season thanks to an 82-62 triumph over visiting Delaware Valley University.
The Devils, ranked seventh in the first regional rankings of the year, improved to 17-6 overall and 10-2 in the MAC Freedom. The loss dropped the Aggies to 7-16 and 4-8.
Both teams shot better than 44 percent from the field and DelVal held a 40-36 edge on the boards. The big difference was turnovers as the Aggies gave up the ball 28 times and FDU-Florham converted them into 29 points compared to 14 turnovers by the Devils and seven points for DelVal.
FDU-Florham led by seven after the first quarter and upped its advantage to 12, 40-28, at the break. The Devils then outscored the Aggies, 29-13, in the third before DelVal had a 21-13 advantage in the final quarter.
Ashley Smink shot 9-for-15 from the field, including a trio of 3-pointers, and paced the Aggies with 21 points. Morgan Mitchell tallied 17 points, five rebounds, three assists and three steals. Amber Grohowski added nine points and a team-best seven rebounds,
For FDU-Florham, Gabrielle Harris hit six, 3-pointers and finished with a game-high 28 points. Taiah Thornton (17 pts), Kendrea Williams (13) and Bria Smith (11) each hit double digits in scoring as well.
DelVal enters the final week of its season, starting with a short road trip to MAC Freedom foe Eastern University on Tuesday, February 13 (6 p.m.).
