Big third quarter pushes Blugolds over Blue Devils

EAU CLAIRE (January 31, 2018) - UW-Eau Claire used a big third quarter to push past UW-Stout Wednesday in a WIAC contest at Zorn Arena for an 85-62 win.

The Blue Devils ran up a 10 point lead in the first period, jumping out to a 14-4 lead over the first five minutes of the game. The Blue Devils fought off any Blugold counter attack and held a 29-20 lead midway through the second period. Eau Claire came back to take a 32-31 lead, but a 3-pointer by Kyncaide Diedrich, a layup by Anna Brown and free throw by Bailey Diersen gave Stout a 37-32 halftime lead.

Stout (7-13, 0-9 WIAC) made it 39-32 on an Amber Fabeck jumper 20 seconds into the second half. The Blugolds (14-6, 6-3 WIAC) took a 44-41 lead over the next three minutes, but Diedrich tied the game with a 3-pointer. It would be Blugolds the rest of the way as Eau Claire outscored Stout 20-2 over the remainder of the quarter and led 64-46 at the third intermission. Eau Claire outscored Stout 32-9 in the period.

Eau Claire shot 51.4 percent (36-70) for the game and hit 63.2 percent (12-19) in the third quarter. Stout shot 34.9 percent (22-63) for the game. The Blue Devils were limited to 25 percent (4-16) in the third quarter.

Both team had three players score in double digits. Diedrich led Stout with 15 points, hitting three 3-pointers. Anna Brown scored 14 points, her second consecutive game in double figures. Diersen scored 12 points, getting seven points at the free throw line.

Kelsey Bakken and Anna Grasskamp led the Blugolds and all scorers with 21 points. Jenni LaCroix matched Diedrich's three 3-pointers and finished the night with 11 points.

The Blugolds held a 43-34 advantage off the glass. Bakken recorded a double-double with 11 boards to lead all players. Fabeck pulled down 10 rebounds.

Stout will be at UW-Whitewater, Saturday, Feb. 3 and at UW-River Falls, Wednesday, Feb. 7.
