WESTFIELD, Mass. -- League-leading Westfield State University got 17 points from freshman forward Melissa Gray (Peabody, Mass.) as the dominant Owls rolled to a 101-56 win over Fitchburg State at the Fitchburg State recreation center on Tuesday night.
The Owls improve to 5-0 in the Massachusetts State Collegiate Athletic Conference, and 11-6 overall, while Fitchburg plummets to 0-5 in the league and 5-12 overall.
Defending conference champion Westfield has now won 44 of its last 47 games against MASCAC opponents dating back to the start 2014-15 season
The two teams played an evenly matched first quarter, with Westfield grabbing a 23-22 lead at the first intermission.
The Owls extended their lead with a 29-12 advantage second quarter, as coach Andrea Bertini's trademarked pressure defense and system offense unloaded on the Falcons. Westfield forced 40 turnovers from the Falcons in the game and took 92 shots from the floor compared to just 66 for Fitchburg.
Westfield State also launched 44 three pointers, connecting on 14. Westfield, which played all 15 players on the roster playing meaningful minutes, and saw 14 of them score in the game. The Owls got 55 points from the bench.
The Owls cracked the century scoring mark for the fifth time this season, and the Owls are averaging nearly 95 points per game against the MASCAC. Westfield surpassed the 100 point barrier with a pair of free throw from sophomore guard Mckenna Doremus late in the game.
Gray, one of the MASCAC's standout freshmen, connected on 7 of 12 shots from the floor and grabbed five rebounds. Junior guard Kierra McCarthy (Ludlow, Mass.) added 14 points, and Lucy Barrett, the Owls leading scorer for the season added 12.
Angelina Marazzi led Fitchburg with 12 points, while Mikala Malbouef added 11.
Westfield will look to extend its conference winning streak on Thursday, when the Owls host Worcester State at 5:30 at the Woodward Center.
