ONEONTA, NY – Visiting Nazareth scored the final 11 points, all from the free-throw line, in the final minute to escape Lambros Arena with a 74-66 victory over the Hawks' women's basketball team Saturday. Hartwick would lead by 17 points midway through the third quarter but the Golden Flyers turned the tables the rest of the way, out-scoring the Hawks 41-16 over the final 14:32.
The loss drops the Hawks to 3-12 overall and 2-4 in the Empire 8. Nazareth ups its records to 7-8 and 3-3 in league play.
The Hawks out-scored the Golden Flyers in each of the first two quarters to take a 32-29 lead into halftime. To start the third quarter, 'Wick erupted for an 18-4 run to gain a 50-33 advantage with 4:49 left. Naz would trim the gap to 11 after three quarters and it slowly chipped away at the Hartwick advantage throughout the fourth.
Hartwick led by seven, 62-55, with 3:46 left to play after a Caitlin Corbett (Altamont, NY/Guilderland) bucket but Nazareth scored the next six points to trim the margin to one with 2:25 remaining. The two teams traded points before Carly Johnson (Greenville, NY/Greenville Central) knocked down a jumper for a three-point, 66-63 lead with 1:24 showing on the clock.
A Naz free throw at the minute mark made it a two-point game. The Golden Flyers made it back to the line with 26 ticks left and they made first free throw. The second was off the mark and the Hawks seemingly came down with the defensive rebound but were whistled for a foul.
Rachel Benedict tied the score with a shot from the line. Two technical fouls ensued and the visitors were able to add four more points from the stripe for a 70-66 advantage. The Hawks had two more chances on offensive but could not convert and Naz tacked on the final four points from the line with under 15 seconds to go.
Johnson would finish as Hartwick's top scorer with 18 points. She made seven of her 11 shots from the floor and hit a trio of three-pointers. Kelly Pine (Hoosick Falls, NY/Hoosick Falls) hit 6-of-9 from the floor to end the night with 16 points. She also hauled down a team-best 10 rebounds.
Corbett scored 11 points and Mary Schoenherr (Unionville, CT/Farmington) contributed 10 points, five rebounds, and a game-high five assists for the Hawks. Alexa DuBois (Hobart, NY/South Kortright) added nine points, four boards, and four assists.
The Golden Flyers received a game-high 32 points from Samantha Peebles. She closed the night with six three-pointers. Benedict contributed 18 points and a game-best 11 rebounds. Lizzie Straub added 12 points.
Hartwick shot 50% from the floor in the contest while holding Nazareth to 39% shooting.
The Hawks are off until Thursday, January 25 when they visit Elmira in an 8 p.m. start.
