CHESTERTOWN, Md. – Sophomore Ashley Gehrin(Chester, N.J./West Morris Mendham) scored 19 points and the Gettysburg College defense held host Washington College to less than 30 percent shooting from the floor in a 68-45 victory in Centennial Conference women's basketball action Saturday afternoon.
Gettysburg (14-2, 10-1 CC) won its fourth consecutive game – all away from home – to maintain a tie with Muhlenberg College (15-1, 10-1 CC) atop the conference standings. The Bullets held Washington (4-12, 2-9 CC) to just 29.3 percent (17-of-58) from the floor while also holding a 44-29 advantage on the boards.
Gehrin tied her second-best career point total on just eight field goal tries. She finished 5-of-8 from the floor and hit all eight of her attempts from the free throw line. Junior Emma Dorshimer (Jenkintown, Pa./Jenkintown) knocked down a trio of three-pointers on the way to 15 points. Seniors Emily Gibbons (Annapolis, Md./Severn School) and Kendra Meredith (Boyds, Md./Northwest) each tallied nine points, the former just missing a double-double with a game-high 12 rebounds.
Cassidy Quattro was the lone Washington player in double-figures with 10 points. Caitlyn Clark added nine points and three steals.
Gettysburg overcame a slow start to post 11 of the final 15 points of the first quarter. A lay-up by Gehrin put the visitors in front 15-10 at the end of the period.
Washington stayed within striking distance and a three-pointer by Jordan Weir tied the score 21-21 with 6:06 before the half. The Bullets rattled off the next seven points and finished the second quarter on a 14-3 run. Gehrin accounted for half of the tallies during the closing run as Gettysburg walked into the locker room leading 35-24.
The Bullets opened the second half with the first six points as two free throws by Gehrin made it 41-24. The lead grew to 22 (53-31) on a three-pointer by Dorshimer with 3:25 to play and the quarter ended with Gettysburg up by 17.
Washington was held without a field goal for over seven minutes spanning the third and fourth quarters as Gettysburg's lead continued to grow, hitting a game-high 28 (66-38) on a three-pointer by sophomore Tyler Keohan (Acton, Mass./Acton Boxborough) with 3:01 left.
Gettysburg finished 22-of-53 (41.5 percent) from the floor and hit 18-of-23 free throws (78.3 percent).
The Bullets continue their road trip at Franklin & Marshall College Thursday, Jan. 25, at 6 p.m.
