COLUMBUS, Ohio — Freshman Laura Pullins scored eight of her career-high 16 points in the fourth quarter to lead No. 19 Marietta College to a 58-54 win at Capital University Wednesday (Jan. 17) evening.
The Pioneers improve to 15-1 overall and 8-1 in the Ohio Athletic Conference. Capital falls to 8-8 on the season and 4-5 in conference play.
"I am really happy with how we stuck together and our competitive spirit tonight," Marietta head coach Kole Vivian said. "We weren't at our best offensively and Capital was the reason for it. But we stuck together and turned up the pressure."
Pullins hit a trio of three-pointers and led all scorers with 16 points. Amisha Herd had another stellar outing with 12 points and seven rebounds. Corrie Burkhardt notched the double-double with 10 points and 10 boards to go along with four steals.
"Pullins had her best scoring game and Marlo (Taylor) made some huge shots for us," Vivian said. "Amisha was a driving force in getting us to make this comeback. She was able to put the game away making some big foul shots down the stretch. And for Corrie to get a double-double was a huge credit to her toughness. I am really happy to be leaving there with this win and we had to earn it."
Elle Folan led the Crusaders with 15 points. Erin Risner had 11 points and 12 boards, while Annika Wachtman had 10 points.
After leading by one point, 17-16, after the first quarter, Marietta hit a cold spell on offense and managed just 15 points in the second and third periods as the Crusaders built a 37-32 lead heading into the fourth quarter.
Pullins drained a three-pointer to open the final period. She added a second triple and Marlo Taylor hit one from behind the arc as Marietta tied the game, 41-41, with 5:59 left on the clock.
A layup from Burkhardt put the Pioneers in front for good. Marietta managed to push the margin to four points, 48-44, on a three-pointer from Taylor at the 2:42 mark.
Capital cut the deficit to one, 53-52, with 20 seconds remaining. The Crusaders were forced to foul and Brooke Borich converted a pair of free throws with 18 seconds left on the clock.
Burkhardt stole the ball on Capital's next possession and was quickly fouled. She hit both free throws to give Marietta its biggest lead of the night, 57-52.
Following a layup from Capital, Herd was fouled with five seconds left and she made one of two free throws to ice the game.
For the game, Marietta shot35.7% (20-of-56) from the floor, 29.4% (5-of-17) from three-point range and 65.0% (13-of-20) at the line. The Crusaders were 20-of-47 (42.6%) from the floor, 8-of-13 (61.5%) behind the arc and 6-of-9 (66.7%) at the line.
The Pioneers outrebounded Capital, 39-29. Marietta turned the ball over 21 times, while the Crusaders committed 24 turnovers.
Marietta returns home to host John Carroll University on Saturday (Jan. 20). Tip off is set for 3 p.m. in Ban Johnson Arena.
