Rowan Women's Basketball's Comeback Falls Short In 84-77 Loss At Stockton

GALLOWAY, NJ – The Rowan University women's basketball team had its four-game win streak snapped with an 84-77 setback at Stockton University in a New Jersey Athletic Conference (NJAC) game on Wednesday.

 

The Profs are 10-6 overall with a 7-3 conference mark. The Ospreys picked up their third straight victory to improve to 10-7 and they are 6-4 in the NJAC. Forwards Sasha Williams (sr. Cherry Hill, NJ/Cherry Hill W.) and Najha Treadwell (sr. Cinnaminson, NJ/Cinnaminson) each produced a double-double for Stockton. Williams ended with 25 points and 11 rebounds while Treadwell tallied 19 points and 13 boards, 10 of which came on the offensive end. Guard Lea Mendolla (sr. Nutley, NJ/Mount Saint Dominic Academy) posted 14 points, eight rebounds and four steals. Guard Hailee Porricelli (fr. Howell, NJ/Freehold Twp.) scored 13 points and forward April Peterson (jr. Lafayette, NJ/High Point Reg.) grabbed six boards.

 

Rowan guard Summer Crilley (sr. Galloway, NJ/Holy Spirit) continued her recent hot streak, pouring in a career-high 30 points and dishing six assists. It was her fourth consecutive game reaching double figures and the second in which she eclipsed the 20-point mark. Center April Szymczyk (sr. Jackson, NJ/Jackson Liberty) registered 20 points, 12 rebounds and four steals. It was her third double-double of the year. Guard Dominique Peters (so. Lawrenceville, NJ/Lawrence) contributed with 17 points and six boards.

 

The Profs began the third quarter with a 38-37 lead. The Ospreys scored the first six points of the period to go ahead 43-38. Crilley hit a jumper (7:39) to close the gap to one (45-44). Stockton followed with a 17-3 run to open up a 15-point advantage (62-47) with 2:50 on the clock. Treadwell sparked the rally with 10 points, Williams produced four and Porricelli added a three-pointer. Mendolla gave the Ospreys their largest lead of the contest (69-51) with 55 seconds to go after a jump shot and a free throw. Stockton outscored Rowan, 32-15 in the period and went into the fourth up 69-53.

 

The Profs opened the final stanza with 10 straight points to trail by six (69-63) with 8:35 to play. Peters scored five points, Szymczyk netted three and guard Samantha Tello (so. Elmwood Park, NJ/St. Mary's) had two. The Ospreys regained momentum with a 7-0 surge, making it a 13-point (76-63) game at the 3:39 mark. Williams totaled five points and Mendolla added a pair of foul shots. Rowan did not go away quietly, embarking on a 14-4 rally to cut the deficit to three (80-77) with 37 seconds remaining. Crilley led the way with eight points. Stockton converted four shots from the line to clinch the win.

 

In the opening frame, Treadwell's two foul shots put the Ospreys ahead 15-7 (4:11). The Profs produced 20 of the next 27 points to take a 27-22 advantage with 7:50 left in the second. Five different players scored in the stretch, led by Crilley's eight. Stockton responded with a 12-2 run to reclaim the lead, 34-29, with 2:05 to go before halftime. Williams tallied six of the 12 points. Szymczyk made two layups and Crilley drilled a three to put Rowan on top, 36-34 (0:47). After Porricelli's three-pointer (0:18), Crilley closed the quarter with two free throws (0:03).

 

The Profs host NJAC opponent William Paterson University on Saturday, Jan. 20 at 1 p.m.
