GRINNELL, Iowa – On Friday night, the Grinnell College women's basketball team knocked off a team it had lost to earlier in the season.
It was more of the same Saturday, as a stellar fourth period sent Grinnell to a 59-55 win over Beloit College at Darby Gymnasium to avenge a 17-point loss in December.
Grinnell, 3-4 in the Midwest Conference and 6-6 overall, outscored the visitors 11-5 in the fourth period while limiting them to 20 percent shooting from the field.
The win continued a stretch of dominance over the Buccaneers, as Grinnell has won eight of its last nine against them in Darby since 2010 and have won six of the past seven games overall going back to 2015.
Kayla Morrissey '18 posted her fourth double-double of the season with 14 points and 10 rebounds. The Grinnell all-conference performer, who moved into seventh on the Pioneers' all-time rebounding chart with 526, also tied a season-high with five assists.
Tyria Heath '21 added 16 points and three steals, while Abby Hellweg '19 and Regan Kasprak '19 came up with two steals each. Hellweg's total matched a career-high.
Grinnell held an opponent to its lowest rebound total of the season while winning the battle of the boards 40-31 including a 16-11 advantage in offensive rebounds. The point total allowed by the Pioneers was the second-lowest of the season.
Grinnell led 16-10 after one period, but Beloit raced back to tie it 27-all by halftime.
Beloit built an eight-point lead twice early in the third period and later took a nine-point edge at 50-41 with 1:09 left. But Grinnell didn't give in, closing the period with a flurry of points as Heath had a basket and two free throws and Olivia Woolam '21 a 3-pointer to bring the Pioneers within 50-48 entering the final frame.
Hellweg made a close-range shot to tie things at the start of the fourth quarter. Twice, Beloit took three-point leads before the Pioneers fought back.
Trailing 55-52 with 6:16 left, Mikayla Kricfalusi '20 hit a layup and Morrissey followed with one to put the Pioneers ahead to stay 56-55 with 3:17 left.
After two missed free throws by Beloit and later a steal by Heath, Kasprak rebounded a missed Pioneer jumper and scored to put Grinnell up 58-55 with 2:15 left.
After a Beloit miss, Grinnell had a strong possession as twice Kessel came up with huge offensive rebounds before Heath was fouled with 4 seconds left. She made one shot to seal the win and send Beloit to 1-6 in the MWC and 3-11 overall.
Grinnell is back in action Wednesday night when Monmouth College visits Darby. Game time is 7:30 p.m.
