Huge 2nd-quarter surge lifts Nor'easters over Lions, 79-59

QUINCY, Mass. -- The University of New England closed the 2nd period with a 25-3 run on the way to a 79-59 victory against Eastern Nazarene College in Commonwealth Coast Conference (CCC) women's basketball action Tuesday evening (Jan. 9) at the Lahue PE Center.

The Nor'easters (9-2) improve to 5-0 in league outings, and have taken the last 20 meetings with the Lions (7-5, 1-4 CCC).

Olivia Shaw led a balanced UNE offense with 13 points and six rebounds. Jocelyn Chaput went for 12 points, seven assists, and four steals, and Elyssa Nicholas canned four treys for another 12 points. Sam MacDonald and Kristie McNall contributed 11 and eight points, respectively.

The Nor'easters forced 32 ENC turnovers in the contest, and converted them into 37 points going the other direction. Meanwhile, UNE only surrendered possession 11 times.

Seniesha Sekaquaptewa tallied a match-high 17 points to go with 10 rebounds to pace Eastern Nazarene, and Kayla Torio added 11 points. Shelby Holmes corralled a game-best 13 boards, part of host's 44-31 advantage in the category.

The Lions were up by as many as six in the early-going, and sat on a 13-10 edge through 10 minutes. It was 19-17 before UNE cranked up the intensity on both ends, and established a 42-22 lead by halftime. Chaput (9 points), Mary Toman (7), and Shaw (5) accounted for most of the scoring during the deciding stretch.

The spread shifted between 26 and 14 following the break.

The Nor'easters will be back at home on Thursday (5:30 p.m.) to face Wentworth Institute of Technology.
