MARSHALL, Texas- Unable to overcome the three point shooting, the East Texas Baptist University women's basketball team saw their seven game win streak snapped by a 72-66 loss to the Whitworth University Pirates on Sunday afternoon. With the loss, ETBU will drop to 7-1 overall but continues to post the best start in program history for the NCAA Division III era.

Kim Childress led the Tigers with 18 points and 13 rebounds, while Baylie Lindsey added 11 points while Katy Boren added 10 points with two shots made from beyond the arc. Madison McCoy stuffed the stat sheet with eight points, eight assists and five rebounds. Grace Douglas and Camy Aguinaldo combined for 50 points and 11 made threes for Whitworth.  

Childress had the early answer for ETBU, scoring all five points for the Tigers to knot the game at 5-5 in the first two minutes of the opening quarter. The Pirates responded with a 13-3 run, capped off by a three pointer and a layup by Douglas to push the score to 18-8 at the 3:02 mark of the first quarter. Whitworth would hold on to the ten point lead after a three pointer by Shannon Tran brought the score to 21-11 at the end of the first period.

Neither team scored a bucket until the 7:43 mark of the second quarter, when Childress converted on a fast break layup to cut the ten point lead to eight (21-13). Back-to-back layups by Erin Meeks cut the lead to four (21-17), with 5:49 to play until halftime. Douglas would respond once again, knocking down a three pointer to push the lead back up to seven, at 24-17 with 4:09 on the game clock. Both teams went into the locker room with Whitworth ahead 32-24.

ETBU shot just 28.1% from the field (9-of-32) and just 1-of-8 from the three point line while the Pirates connected on 12-of-29 shooting for 41.4% and 7-of-14 shooting from beyond the arc in the first 20 minutes of play.

ETBU came out storming in the third quarter, with Boren scoring the first five points in the first two minutes of the half to trim the lead to five (34-29). The Tigers managed to make it a one point game, until a steal and dish by McCoy to Amanda Wilson for the layup gave the home team their first lead since the opening frame, 34-33, with 6:18 to play in the quarter. Whitworth would convert on six points from the free throw line to put her team back up by five (39-34). The lead would remain at five in the closing seconds of the third quarter (47-42), until a three pointer by Douglas pushed the lead back to eight, at 50-42 to close the quarter.

Whitworth opened the final quarter of play with a three pointer by Aguinaldo to push the lead to nine at 53-44 at the 8:28 mark of the game. A 7-2 run by ETBU after a three pointer by McCoy cut the lead to 55-51 with 5:42 remaining in the contest. McCoy capped off her personal 7-0 run with a layup at the 4:22 mark of the matchup to tie the game at 55-55. The Pirates managed to push the lead to 62-57, when Douglas knocked down a three pointer to increase the score to eight (65-57) in the final minute of play. Whitworth would eventually hand ETBU their first loss of the season, with a 72-66 win.

The Tigers will have the next 12 days off before traveling to Kerville, Texas, to battle Schreiner University on Dec. 29. Friday's matchup is set to tip-off at 6:00 p.m.
