HOUGHTON, NY – A Madison Detwiler layup with 11 seconds remaining in overtime lifted host Houghton past Hartwick's women's basketball team, 66-64, on Saturday at the Nielsen Center in Houghton, NY.
The Hawks held a 64-62 edge with 1:46 left in the extra period before Hannah Cybart evened things with a layup 20 seconds later to tie the score. 'Wick had two chances on the offensive end but came away empty before Detwiler cleaned up the offensive glass with a put-back to put the Highlanders up two points. Hartwick had one last possession but was never able to get a shot off.
With the loss, the Hawks fall to 2-9 overall and 1-1 in the Empire 8. The Highlanders improve to 6-6 and 2-1 in league play.
Carly Johnson (Greenville, NY/Greenville Central) led four Hawks in double figures with a game-high 18 points. She added three rebounds, three steals, two three-pointers, and two assists. Alexa DuBois (Hobart, NY/South Kortright) scored 15 points on 7-of-9 shooting to go along with five rebounds.
Kelly Pine (Hoosick Falls, NY/Hoosick Falls) and Mary Schoenherr (Unionville, CT/Farmington) each scored 12 points. Pine added a team-best six rebounds and Schoenherr contributed game-highs of six assists and four steals.
Neither team led by more than three points through the opening 15 and a half minutes of the contest. The Hawks got some breathing room with an 8-0 run over the final four and a half minutes to take a 30-21 lead into halftime.
A layup from Caitlin Corbett (Altamont, NY/Guilderland) with 7:27 left in the third quarter gave the Hawks their biggest lead, 36-23. A DuBois bucket equaled the advantage later in the quarter at the 3:16 mark. The Highlanders trimmed the gap to six heading into the final quarter and the game was tight the rest of the way.
Pine would break a 49-all tie with a basket and free throw with 3:03 left in the fourth quarter. She would score the Hawks' final seven points down the stretch in regulation. A Houghton three-pointer gave the hosts a two-point, 54-52 lead at the two-minute mark. Pine answered with a pair of free throws 22 ticks later to tie the score once again. The Highlanders gained the upper hand again but Pine's layup with 53 seconds to go evened it at 56. Both teams had looks in the final 35 seconds but the game headed to overtime.
At the midway point in overtime, a Johnson three-point play put the Hawks up 63-60. Leslie Moose hit a pair from the line for Houghton before DuBois hit 1-of-2 from the stripe for a 64-62 lead with 1:46 to play. It would mark 'Wick's final point as Cybart tied it and Detwiler gave Houghton the lead for good.
The game would feature 11 tie scores and six lead changes. The Hawks made 44% from the floor but struggled from three-point range (3-of-20). Houghton made 40% from the floor and held a 38-29 edge on the glass.
Hartwick heads back on the road on Thursday, January 11 with a game at Utica beginning at 8 p.m.
