Bears bow to Blue Devils

FREDONIA, N.Y.—SUNY Fredonia (5-7, 3-2 SUNYAC) defeated the SUNY Potsdam women's basketball team (1-9, 0-5) 65-35 on Friday evening to kick off the 2018 portion of the schedule. Freshman forward Hannah Marcellus (Potsdam, N.Y./Madrid-Waddington) led the Bears with a career-high seven points. Junior guards Riley Luckie (Ogdensburg, N.Y./Ogdensburg Free Academy) and Abbey Smith(Bainbridge, N.Y./Bainbridge-Guilford) each contributed six and five points, respectively.
 
The Blue Devils broke an 8-8 tie with an 8-3 run to close the first quarter and grab the lead for good. Marcellus had five points in the opening quarter, while Luckie scored four and senior forward Keme Fofana (Bronx, N.Y./AECI Charter H.S.) added a layup.
 
Buckets by freshman forward Nicole Hansen (Fulton, N.Y./G. Ray Bodley) and Marcellus got Potsdam within 16-15 and three from Smith closed the gap to 21-18 with 7:14 to play. However, Fredonia pulled away with an 11-2 stretch to take a 32-20 advantage into the break.
 
The Blue Devils outscored the Bears 17-10 in the third quarter to pull away for a 49-30 lead. Smith scored three more in the period, while Marcellus, Luckie and Hansen combined for the other six points.
 
Fredonia put the game away in the fourth quarter with a 16-5 advantage to close out the 65-35 win. Sophomore guard Leah Giavatto (Beacon, N.Y./Beacon) got on the board in the quarter with a bucket.
 
Jenna Einink led the Blue Deivls with 19 points and 12 boards. Justice Nauden scored 13 and Jacque law had nine on the night.
 
The Bears are back in action tomorrow at Buffalo State with a 1 p.m. tip.
