Daytona Beach, FL --- Senior Ama Biney (Worcester, MA) handed in a double-double as she and classmate Madison Beck (Syracuse, NY) each scored 17 points and freshman Caitlin Boermeester (Billerica, MA) established a new career-best of 11 points as WPI defeated Spalding (KY), 64-44, Thursday afternoon in a non-conference women's basketball meeting as part of the Daytona Beach Shootout at Bethune Cookman.
The Engineers, who never trailed in 80 minutes of action, returns north with a 7-2 ledger. The Golden Eagles, meanwhile, dip to 4-7.
Biney, who also led with 10 rebounds, shot 7-of-14 as Beck was a tad more efficient on 7-of-10 from the field. Boermeester was 4-for-4 overall and 3-for-3 from downtown. Senior Maura Buckley (Melrose, MA) scored eight, pulled down six rebounds and registered five blocks, which is tied for the most in a decade. Senior Stasha Greenalch (Newington, CT) handed out seven assists.
Sophomore Tselem Gahagan (Columbus, GA) paced the Golden Eagles with 13 points followed by classmate Megan Goeing (Louisville, KY) with 10 off the bench. Junior Jenna Thornhill (McQuady, KY) was the team's top rebounder with eight.
WPI won seven of eight quarters and held its opponents to a field goal percentage under 30, including 12.5 percent from 3-point land on Thursday.
The Engineers outscored Spalding 44-28 in the paint, 26-7 off turnovers and 12-2 on the fast break. The Golden Eagles scored 13 of 17 second chance points and owned a slim 16-15 edge in bench points.
WPI heads to Westfield State Saturday, December 30 to face SUNY New Paltz at 3pm. Spalding also returns to action on the 30th with a 7pm tilt at Transylvania.
