Four Bearcats score in double figures in PAC win at Geneva

BEAVER FALLS, Pa. (Dec. 9) – Four Bearcats scored in double figures as the Saint Vincent women's basketball team bested Geneva 87-53 in Presidents' Athletic Conference play at the Metheny Fieldhouse in Beaver County.
 
Sophomore Taylor Boring led with a career-high 16 points, which included 5-of-7 from the field, converting 4-of-5 three-pointers behind the arc. Senior Babette Sanmartinadded 14 points and seven rebounds, while sophomore Kayla Slovenec chipped in 11 points and senior Kiara Arnold contributed 10 points.
 
Slovenec opened up the scoring with an early three-pointer to put the Bearcats on the scoreboard first.
 
After a jumper from Geneva cut the Bearcats lead to 5-4, SVC rattled off six straight points to make it 11-4 at the 3:30 mark, getting a basket each from Maria MorganMara Benvenuti and Slovenec.
 
A little later Arnold hit a jumper to make it a nine-point (15-6) advantage with 1:15 left in the first quarter. The Golden Tornadoes closed the quarter with a 5-0 run to make it 15-11 after the first 10 minutes of play.
 
Geneva would close to within one point (15-14) with a three-pointer on the opening possession of the second quarter. SVC would respond with a 10-0 run to take a 25-14 lead at the 7:02 mark. Arnold and Boring would combine for all 10 points during the run.
 
The Bearcats were able to maintain the double-digit lead for the majority of the remainder of the half, finishing the first half with a 9-2 run to take a 36-23 lead into halftime.
 
In the final minute of the half, freshman Carlee Kilgus converted a layup and then Morgan connected on a long three-pointer from straight on to beat the first half buzzer.
 
SVC shot 48.4 percent from the field and committed just two turnovers during the first half.
 
The lead reached as many as 18 in the third quarter, as SVC took a 45-27 advantage on a three-pointer by Morgan at the 5:34 mark. Geneva would use a 10-4 run to cut the deficit to 49-37 with 2:24 left in the quarter.
 
A baseline jumper by Arnold and a three-pointer from Van Volkenburg helped SVC stop the Geneva run and extend its lead to 54-37 after three quarters.
 
Saint Vincent put the game away by outscoring Geneva by a 33-16 margin in the fourth quarter. The Bearcats shot 54.1 percent from the field in the game, including making 9-of-19 from the three-point line. SVC out-rebounded Geneva by a 36-25 edge. The Bearcats also dished out 23 assists as a team, five of which came from freshman Jenna Lafko.
 
Saint Vincent moves to 3-1 in the PAC and 5-4 overall. Geneva drops to 0-4 in PAC play and 2-6 overall.
 
Saint Vincent returns to action when they head to Daytona Beach, Fla. to play two games before Christmas. The Bearcats will face Illinois Institute of Technology on Tuesday, Dec. 19. The contest will be played at Bethune Cookman's Moore Gym with a 3 p.m. tip-off.
