Cortland Women Improve to 3-0 in SUNYAC Play After Win at Fredonia

FREDONIA, N.Y. - Kerry McHugh (Monroe/Monroe-Woodbury) scored 22 points, including six 3-pointers, as the Red Dragons remained unbeaten in SUNYAC play with a 65-52 victory at Fredonia.

McHugh finished 6-of-8 from the arc and 8-of-14 from the field overall for the Red Dragons (3-4, 3-0 SUNYAC). Kristy Vitucci (Deer Park) hit all three of her 3-point attempts and finished with 10 points, five rebounds and four assists.

Shana Crespo (Monroe/Monroe-Woodbury) also finished with 10 points and five rebounds. She was 4-of-8 from the floor. Justine Crespo (Monroe/Monroe-Woodbury) led the Red Dragons with 12 rebounds and three steals, in addition to scoring six points, and Taylor Miller (Freeport) finished with seven points, five rebounds and a team-high five assists. Becca Krenzer (Pavilion/Batavia-Notre Dame) went 3-for-3 from the field for six points.

Jacque Law and Jenna Einink led Fredonia (3-6, 1-2 SUNYAC) with 11 points each. Einink also registered eight rebounds and three assists. Alisha Szumigala led the Blue Devils with 10 rebounds.

Cortland trailed 11-8 after one quarter and was down 17-14 just over four minutes into the second. The Red Dragons mounted a 15-3 run, starting with two McHugh treys and a layup, and capped by S. Crespo's layup with 44 seconds left, to take a 29-20 lead. The Red Dragons led 31-23 at halftime.

Cortland built its lead to as high as 17 points in the third quarter, and the Red Dragons led by 25 at 60-35 on a Vitucci 3-pointer with 6:43 left in the fourth. Fredonia made things a little interesting by scoring 17 of the next 20 points, capped by two Justine Nauden 3-pointers, to pull within 63-52 with 1:13 left. Miller and Vitucci each hit one free throw in the final 40 seconds to close the scoring.

The Red Dragons shot 60 percent (9-of-15) from 3-point range and 45 percent from the floor overall, while Fredonia was 32 percent from the field and 19 percent (4-of-21) from the arc.

Cortland will play at Buffalo State Saturday at 1 p.m. in a SUNYAC contest.
