UMHB women hold off U.T.-Dallas

BELTON, Texas –The University of Mary Hardin-Baylor women's basketball team earned a 61-54 win over the University of Texas at Dallas Comets Thursday evening in Belton. The win improved the Cru to 5-2 on the season and 2-1 in American Southwest Conference action while the Comets matched UMHB's record at 5-2 on the year and 2-1 in conference play.
 
The first quarter played closely with the Cru leading by as many as five before the Comets took a two-point lead to end the quarter. The Comets extended their lead to eight points three minutes into the second quarter but the Cru was able to cut that lead to two points to close the half. UMHB outscored UT Dallas 23-13 in the third quarter, led by Kendall Rollins with nine points. The Comets cut UMHB's lead to three points in the fourth but were unable to catch UMHB who secured the seven-point victory.
 
Hannah Holt led the Cru with 20 points followed by Rollins with 15 and Meghan Turner with seven. Turner led the Cru with five assists followed by Alicia Blackwell with four. UMHB shot 47.2 percent in the contest, 28.6 percent from beyond the arc and 58.3 percent from the free throw line. Defensively, Alicia Blackwell led the Cru with nine total rebounds and eight defensive boards while Rollins added seven. Ashley Caldwell led all athletes with five blocks and Holt added two steals to force the Comets into 15 turnovers.
 
McKenzie Petty and Victoria Pena led the Comets with 11 points followed by Kelley Skinner with 10. UT Dallas shot 23.9 percent in the game, 26.9 percent from the three-point line and 75 percent in foul shots. The Comets out-rebounded the Cru 49-34 and forced UMHB into 19 turnovers.
 
UMHB returns to action on Sunday, December 10th in a 2 p.m. match against Southwestern University at the Mayborn Campus Center in Belton.
