The No. 14 ranked University of Wisconsin-Whitewater women's basketball team ran out to a big lead early and never trailed Thursday night in an 82-65 triumph over Augustana (Ill.) in a non-conference affair at Kachel Gymnasium.

The Warhawks (5-0 overall) shot 49.2 percent from the floor and held the previously unbeaten Vikings to 32.1 percent from the field to win their 27th regular season, non-conference game in their last 28 and avenge a loss last season at Augustana.

Senior guard Brooke Trewyn inched closer to the 1,000-career point plateau with her third double-double of the season in a 22-point, 13-rebound, six-assist, three-steal effort. She enters next week's game at Coe with 990 career points.

Junior center Becky Deichl tallied 18 points on 8-of-13 shooting and added eight rebounds and two blocks, and sophomore guard Becky Deichl collected 12 points on 6-of-7 shooting off the bench. Senior guard Malia Smith contributed nine points, six rebounds and three assists.

Using a combination of stifling defense and fast-paced offense, the Warhawks started the game on an 11-0 run, highlighted by a combined nine points from Trewyn and Deichl.

The Vikings (4-1) scored six straight to get back to within two possessions at the 6:15 mark of the first quarter, but Deichl converted a put-back layup as the buzzer sounded to give UW-Whitewater a 22-13 advantage through the first 10 minutes.

Sophomore guard Becky Raeder started the second quarter with a jumper to restore the Warhawks' double-digit lead, but Augustana closed to within six midway through the period.

Raeder gave UW-Whitewater a 13-point lead with 2:56 remaining, and Smith pushed the lead to 15 with 2:10 on the clock. Trewyn gave the team its largest lead of the first half at 44-26 with eight seconds left after a pair of free throws.

The Warhawks led by as many as 24 points in the third before the Vikings closed the quarter with a 7-0 run to draw within 64-47 by the end of the period.

Fueled by 11 points by Trewyn in the final quarter, UW-Whitewater led by as many as 26 points in the fourth, and Augustana closed the final margin to 17 over the final minute of action.

After an eight-day break, the Warhawks resume action Saturday, Dec. 9, at Coe. Tipoff is set for 2 p.m. in Cedar Rapids, Iowa.
