Kerrville, Texas – The University of Mary Hardin-Baylor women's basketball team trailed in the first quarter, but turned it on over the final thirty minutes as the Cru women rolled to an 87-54 victory over Schreiner University Saturday night in Kerrville. UMHB improves to 2-1 on the season with the victory. The loss drops the Mountaineers to 1-3 on the year.
Schreiner built an 18-17 lead after the opening period, but the Cru fought back to lead by as many as eight points in the second. UMHB led 33-29 at the half before really taking control of the game in the third quarter. The Cru scored the first 15 points of that stanza to open up a 48-29 lead and the UMHB edge was 63-41 after three periods. The Cru continued to stretch it out in the final quarter and the Mountaineers would not get closer than 22 points the rest of the way.
Hannah Holt led a balanced UMHB scoring effort with 15 points and Kendall Rollins scored 12. Aubrie Elliott chipped in a career-high 10 points off the bench and Alicia Blackwell had eight points and a team-best eight rebounds for the Cru. Fourteen different players scored for UMHB as the Cru shot 44 percent from the field and 39 percent from beyond the arc. UMHB also out rebounded Schreiner 51-43 and forced 23 turnovers in the game.
Kendall Dyal and Danielle Cain had 11 points apiece for the Mountaineers. Kendra Brown added ten points and Jordyn Villa pulled down a game-high ten rebounds. Schreiner shot 29 percent from the field and just 20 percent from beyond the arc in the loss.
The Cru women return to action with a 6:00 PM non-conference game at Texas Lutheran University Tuesday in Seguin. UMHB will open American Southwest Conference play with road games at LeTourneau University and East Texas Baptist University next weekend.
