FROSTBURG, MD --- After shooting nearly 60% from the floor over the first three periods, EMU's basketball women hit a cold spell at the wrong time. The Royals shot a shade over 30% in the final 10 minutes of Tuesday's game at Frostburg State, being out-scored by 10 in the frame en route to an 81-67 loss.
The women also cut back on the turnover problems which had plagued them earlier in the game, but they couldn't make up for the Bobcats (3-1), who connected on 9-of-17 shots in the fourth and made no turnovers.
For the game, Eastern Mennonite (2-2) shot a blistering 52% from the floor and controlled the boards, 38-29. But Frostburg State made the difference by hitting on nearly half of their numerous three pointers, going 13-for-27, while also winning the turnover battle with just eight miscues to EMU's 20.
The Bobcats led by as many as nine points in the first half before Jess Washington (Chesapeake, Va./Great Bridge) capped a 14-6 spurt to get the women within 35-34. FSU led at halftime, 38-36.
Eastern Mennonite finally got the lead midway through the third, using back-to-back three pointers to flip in front, 49-47. Hope Simmons (Dayton, Va./Turner Ashby) assisted Washington and then got her own layup to give the Royals their biggest lead at 55-49 with 3:32 left in the third. But Frostburg State scored the final 10 points of the frame, including a three pointer at the buzzer, to go back in front 59-55 and take the wind out of EMU's sails.
The women's dry spell continued into the fourth, as the Bobcats scored on their first three possessions to make it a 16-0 run and a 65-55 cushion. The Royals made a valiant push and got within 70-65 on a triple from Chrissy Delawder (Broadway, Va./Broadway) with 5:21 to go, but they would not hit another bucket, getting only a pair of free throws from Delawder as Frostburg State pulled away.
Washington and Delawder co-led EMU, as each scored 16 points. Washington had a game high eight rebounds, while Delawder added six boards and hit 4-of-6 three pointers. Cheyenne Suamataia-Teo (Stafford, Va./Mountain View) was good for 11 points and six rebounds.
Victoria Diggs shot 6-for-11 from outside and led Frostburg State with 20 points and seven assists. Megan Kelly nailed five triples and scored 15 points. Sydney Stotler provided the inside presence with 14 points and six rebounds.
The Royals have a small break over Thanksgiving before heading to Mount Aloysius in Cresson, Pa., on Saturday. Game time is 2:00pm.
