Rowan Women's Basketball Defeats Grove City, 77-69 At Coaches vs. Cancer Classic

YORK, PA – The Rowan University women's basketball team had a 77-69 victory against Grove City College on the first day of the Coaches vs. Cancer Classic Friday night.

 

York College (PA) is the host for the two-day tournament. The Profs (2-0) play the Spartans on Saturday, Nov. 18 at 3 p.m. The Wolverines (1-1) face The College of New Jersey on Saturday at 1 p.m. York topped the Lions, 65-62 in the opening game on Friday.

 

Guard Summer Crilley (sr. Galloway, NJ/Holy Spirit) led Rowan with 20 points and seven rebounds. Guard Alexis Kriley (so. Fair Lawn, NJ/Fair Lawn) and guard/forward Alex Raring (sr. Linwood, NJ/Mainland Reg.) produced 11 points apiece. Kriley added six steals. Center April Szymczyk (sr. Jackson, NJ/Jackson Liberty) tallied 10 points and seven boards. The Profs forced 29 turnovers and scored 27 points off the miscues. Rowan was 15-of-32 from the field in the second half.

 

For Grove City, guard Lexie Arkwright (sr. Mercer, PA/Mercer) poured in a game-high 24 points and brought down eight rebounds. Guard McKenzie Black (jr. Akron, OH/Green) totaled 20 points. Guard Erin Logue (jr. St. Petersburg, PA/Allegheny-Clarion Valley) corralled seven boards. The Wolverines shot 45% on field goals for the contest.

 

Grove City had an early 5-3 lead before the Profs took over with a 7-0 run, which ended at the 8:04 mark. Szymczyk had a layup then Kriley scored five straight points. The Wolverines responded with a 20-2 surge to end the opening quarter. Arkwright led the charge with 12 points and Grove City was ahead 25-12.

 

Rowan began the second with 16 of the first 19 points to even the score at 28 (3:06). Five different players scored in the stretch. Two foul shots by Arkwright (2:39) put the Wolverines ahead 30-28. The Profs registered the last six points to go into halftime with a 34-30 advantage. Crilley tallied four points and Szymczyk had two. Arkwright paced all scorers in the half with 14 points and Crilley followed with 12.

 

In the third, Rowan was ahead 44-37 after two free throws by Crilley (5:28). Logue made a layup (5:03) and Black drilled a three (4:24) to cut the deficit to two (44-42). Black hit another triple with 1:54 on the clock and Grove City trailed 51-48. The Profs scored the final six points of the period to lead 57-48. Guard Dominique Peters (so. Lawrenceville, NJ/Lawrence), Raring and Szymczyk each totaled two points.

 

Guard Olivia Rulon's (jr. Cape May Court House, NJ/Wildwood Catholic) layup to start the fourth (9:22) gave Rowan its largest lead of the night at 11 (59-48). The Wolverines followed with eight consecutive points to close the gap to three (59-56) with 7:03 remaining. Arkwright recorded five points and forward Kate Balcom (so. Londonderry, NH/Londonderry) added three. Black's jumper (4:49) made the score 66-64. The Profs increased the margin to nine (73-64) with 2:21 left. Peters posted five points and Kriley made a jumper. Grove City came within four (73-69) with 59 seconds to go before Rowan iced the game with four foul shots.
